Emerson Reid Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Emerson P. Reid, age 51, passed away suddenly on Sept. 21, 2011.
His life began on Dec. 29, 1959, in Williamsburg, Va., the son of Rachel Reid and the late Pernell Reid Sr. After graduating from Lafayette High School, Emerson began a lifelong quest for education. He attended Thomas Nelson Community College, where he received an Associate Degree in Business Administration. He attended Norfolk State University, where he received both a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration as well as a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. He attended Hampton University, where he received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) as well as a Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN). Throughout his life, even during the current year, Emerson took classes and was seeking additional certifications in the field he so loved, Nursing. Emerson was an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with a Board Certification in the State of Virginia, and was a member of various organizations and associations. Emerson, "Mr. Reid," as he was so affectionately called, was employed by the State of Virginia for more than 23 years, with the majority of his time spent at Eastern State Hospital, where he was currently employed. He was an active member of Little Zion Baptist Church, where he served as a member of the Board of Trustees, member of the choir and as an usher. He volunteered his time to the community by serving meals to the sick and shut-in. Emerson also volunteered his time providing health education to various communities through health fairs and health related symposiums. Emerson always gave unconditional love, support, guidance, and health care advice to his family and close friends. He enjoyed family time, especially spending time with his favorite and only nephew, Bradley. His passion for life, learning and culture led him to travel to many countries with his family. His passion for work led him to be a workaholic, spending countless hours with his co-workers and work family at Eastern State Hospital.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Alonzo Akrie.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving mother, Rachel M. Reid; along with his siblings, Elder Clifton G. Washington Jr. (Joyce) of Virginia Beach, Va., Melvina Kelly of West Columbia, S.C., Bonita C. Reid of Williamsburg, Va., Pernell W. Reid Jr. of DeQueen, Ark., and Lenora G. Reid of Newport News, Va.; his favorite and only nephew, Bradley C. Reid; his three nieces, his three great-nieces, his six great-nephews, his two great great-nieces, his three aunts, his three uncles, a host of other loving relatives and many caring friends.
A funeral service, celebrating the life he lived, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at Little Zion Baptist Church, 8625 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, Va., with the Rev. I met Emerson many years ago at ESH. What a wonderful person he was. He was so dedicated to his Nursing profession.
He was one of the kindest, sweetest and sincere persons I ever known.
When I had to go to the Nursing Office, he would always greet me with such compliments. He called me Miss Peggy.
Emerson, I will never forget you and your sweet and caring ways.
May the family find comfort in knowing that Emerson was a christian man, and he is now receiving his reward for all the compansion he had for his fellow man.

What a wonderul thing to know that he made so many friends here and just imagine what he will do in God's kingdom.

Mr. Reid was a great man with a huge heart, and smile. I've had the pleasure of knowing him for the past 13yrs; an awesome supervisor he was. When job stressors began to weigh us down; Mr. Reid would come through, and have us all laughing and smiling. I remember him saying so very often "this too shall pass". He's always encouraged us to "get that education". Mr. Reid; will forever live in our hearts....
