Harry PULLEN Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Harry Stephens Pullen passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, after a brief illness. Mr. Pullen was born July 29, 1925, in Alamo, Ga.
Mr. Pullen had been a resident of Newport News since 1942 coming to Newport News with his father from Georgia. Harry had a varied career. He was employed in the Shipyard during the war, served as Meat Manager in several food stores on the Peninsula in the 1950's and returned to the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry-Dock Co., in the 1960's, where he retired as an Electrician Supervisor in the X-31 Department in 1988.
Harry was a jack of all trades and could fix anything until his later years when his health restricted his activity. He will be missed by his family and many friends. His family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Harry's closest companions, Bob Wiggs and Leroy Garrison, who spent much time with Harry the last years of his life.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Tincie Pullen; his parents, W.G. and Myrtle Pullen; his brother, Hugh Donald Pullen; and sister, Marjorie Parker.
Mr. Pullen is survived by his son, Steve Pullen and his wife, Gina of Williamsburg, son, Donald and his companion, Allyn of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; several brothers and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews in the Tidewater area.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 6, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Entombment will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Parklawn Memorial Park Mausoleum on Saturday, May 7, where he will be laid to rest next to the love of his life, Tincie.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

We were out on his pontoon boat one afternoon and saw a man that had fallen into the side of the lake on his John Deere lawn mower. We were the first one on the scene to help him. We both pulled him to safety. Of course we had to leave the John Deere. He said he would get someone to haul it back on land. Not to worry. We both agreed on our way back that God put us in the right place at the right time. Harry Pullen was my best buddy. I will never forget him. He was one of a kind.

My husband and I met Harry when we moved to Lake Gaston back in 2000. There was something truly special about him and I still to this day thank God that we became close friends. I called him "my buddy" we loved to go to Ralph´s for lunch. He loved his little dog "Tinci" and that little dog loved him. I will NEVER forget him and the time we spent together. I thank God for Harry Pullen.

Its hard to believe its been nine years. I still think of Harry every week. I leave tomorrow to go trout fishing. Every time ago I think of him and how he shared his trout stories with me. I'll always remember him as one of the greatest men I knew.

Harry Pullen was the example of a good and giving man. My family loved him and always held him in the highest regard. He would always put others before himself and his own needs. Our time with him @ Lake Gaston is and always will be irreplaceable in our lives. Harry touched a lot of people with his kindness and his humor. Harry will always be remembered as friend, someone you could always count on and a person who always made you feel better about yourself after you had been around him. He will be missed!

Steve and Donny our thoughts and prayers are certainly with you guys. My family was very fond of your father and we only got to share your mother for a short time. I have a lot of great memories of your dad and he was an excellent friend to my father and mother. After my dad passing, your father was awesome to my mom. She loved him dearly. I have one of his fishing poles and some tackle he gave me years ago and plan to pass it on to my son. May god bless you both and hold you close.
