Thomas Sanders Obituary
Born in McSherrystown, Pa., he moved to the Peninsula in 1950 upon enrollment in the Newport News Apprentice School. He retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock in 1993 after 43 years of dedicated service as a Senior Piping Designer and Supervisor of the Piping Department.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus #5480 and was a Fourth Degree Knight. He spent many hours working for Relay for Life and Meals on Wheels. He was a regular at the Wellness Center, where he swam and did water aerobics for many years. He enjoyed golf and spending time in Nags Head with his family.
Mr. Sanders was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Cora Sanders, and his brother, Kenneth R. Sanders.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Carolyn H. Sanders; his sons, Bruce Sanders and his wife, Maria, of Virginia Beach and Eric Sanders and his wife, Pam, of Toronto, Canada; his brother, Roy Sanders and his wife, Delores, of York, Pa.; his sister, Sally Long of McSherrystown, Pa.; his sister-in-law, Nancy Sanders of Hanover, Pa.; and his grandchildren, Christopher and Nicole Sanders.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church by the Rev. Ken Wood. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Relay for Life, 11835 Canon Blvd., Suite A-102, Newport News, VA 23606.

Carolyn and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. You were our good neighbors and friends for so many years. Although the giant hedge was between us, it was a great comfort knowing you good people were there. I remember one time when Tom scooped me off the pavement after a bad bike accident and carried me home. I was probably about 6 years old, but I never forgot what a kind gesture that was. May you find strength in knowing what a great impact Tom had on so many lives. God bless you.
