Paul Scott Obituary

Paul Odell Scott

Paul Odell Scott of Ruckersville, Virginia, passed away at the age of 88, on March 13, 2022, at home, in the presence of his loving family.

On Groundhog Day of 1934, he was born to parents, Bertha Davis Scott and William Bryce Scott in Blacksburg, Virginia. Most of his childhood was spent growing up in Norfolk, Va. alongside his five siblings. After meeting the love of his life, Carolyn June Scott, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and lived overseas in Korea for two years. Following this stint, Paul and Carolyn married and he continued to serve the U.S. Army faithfully for another 18 years. They shared a beautiful life raising four children and living in various parts of the middle east until moving back to the states in 1972. After retiring from the army, the Scott family moved to Virginia, where they have remained since 1975.

Paul went on to study data processing at Kansas State University and received his associate degree in applied science at Piedmont Virginia Community College, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He spent 20 years as a computer specialist for the U.S. Army Foreign Science and Technology Center (now NGIC) before retirement. In his spare time, he enjoyed tending to his property, creating projects for himself around the house, and being an altruistic pillar in the community. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family, especially his wife Carolyn, sing songs, tell stories, and eat tomatoes fresh off the vine.

No matter where he was, Paul never met a stranger. His laugh and smile were contagious, and his love for God was evident in every action and word he spoke throughout his life's journey. Paul embodied the Christian values of love, forgiveness, humility, and acceptance. He was known by all for his unwavering kindness, selfless generosity, and wonderful sense of humor. We all cherish every moment spent with this beloved man.

Paul is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years, Carolyn Scott; his children, Michael Scott and wife, Kim, Daniel Scott and wife, Joyce, and Mary Elliott and husband, Robert; daughter-in-law, Theresa Lynn Scott McCauley; his grandchildren, Cristina, Dylan, Robert James II "Jimmy", Jacob, Caryn, and Nathan; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Jordan, and David Jr.; and his siblings, Richard Scott, Lois Hill and Theodore Scott. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert James "Jim" Scott; brothers, Donald and Robert Scott, and his parents.

Family night was held at Laurel Hill Baptist Church in Charlottesville, Va., on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, from 5 until 8 p.m. This evening began with a full service, followed by family greeting, dinner reception, and visitation until 8 pm. Another service was held on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at Preddy Funeral Home in Madison, Virginia, at 11 a.m. This service was followed by a procession to Culpeper National Cemetery for burial at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, we would like friends and family to donate to a cause that we believe Paul would feel strongly about. In these trying times, it is important to lift up others and support those in need. Please help by giving donations on behalf of Paul Scott to the Ukrainian Red Cross Society. Dear Family,
I worked at NGIC/FSTC with Paul in IT for many years. He was a dear friend and co-worker to me during those years. I am so sorry to hear about his death. I always thought about him on groundhog day, and a few years ago called him on his birthday. That was the last time we talked. I wish I could have attended his service but I'm out of town. I know he's in a peaceful place now. I also know how much you'll miss your wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. God bless you. Fondly, Sandy
