John Getz Obituary

John Alden "PapPap" Getz, 89, of Charlottesville, Virginia passed away on July 8, 2017. Born on February 1, 1928, in Criders, (Rockingham County) Virginia, he was a son of the late John Israel and Martha Jane Turner Getz of Broadway, Virginia, and the husband of the late Helen Irene Fahrney Getz. John and Helen were married in August 1949 and remained married for 61 years and 10 months. Helen died on June 15, 2011. In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his two brothers, Turner Wayne Getz and his wife, Anna Virginia Spitzer Getz andBenny Israel Getz and his wife, Bernice Smith Getz; and two of his four sisters, Wilda Ruth Getz Clayton and her husband, Thomas J. Clayton andThelma Marie Getz Showalter and her husband, Clayton D. Showalter. John is survived by two sisters, Nina Mae Getz Bibble of Linville, Virginia and Flemmie Eileen Getz Stultz and her husband, Owen G Stultz of Roanoke, Virginia; he is also survived by his daughter, Marla Joy Getz Langdon and her husband, Robert G. Langdon of Crozet, Virginia; and two sons, Bradley Jay Getz and his wife, Rebecca Thomas Getz of Troy, Virginia and John Daryl Getz and his wife, Dana Getz of Singers Glen, Virginia. John had five grandchildren, Elizabeth "Beth" Getz Gibson, daughter of Bradley and Rebecca Getz and her husband, Melvin Gibson of Charlottesville, Virginia, Jeremy Alden Langdon, son of Marla and Robert Langdon and his wife, Anna Eller Langdon of Arnold, Maryland, Danielle Sandlas Langdon, daughter of Marla and Robert Langdon, of Crozet, Va., and Forrest Getz and Annabelle Terry, son and daughter of John Daryl Getz. John had three great grandchildren, Virginia Rose and Austin Tyler Gibson, daughter and son of Beth and Melvin Gibson, and Trevor Alden Langdon, son of Jeremy and Anna Langdon. John leaves behind many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifetime friends. John was a 1945 graduate of Broadway High School in Broadway Virginia. After high school, he served two years in the U.S. Navy. He retired from the National Cash Register Company after 41 years of service. John had a real zest for life and enjoyed almost everything it had to offer. He loved gardening, hunting, walking through the woods studying the wonders of Mother Nature, sharing many wonderful stories of his life to anyone who would listen, and so much more. He loved studying genealogy and recording his family history. He was very active in his church, the Charlottesville Church of the Brethren for many years. John also had a tender heart for animals. He was truly a wonderful man, and will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m.on Monday, June 10, 2017, at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road in Charlottesville, Virginia. A graveside committal will be conducted at 11 a.m.on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at the Riverview Cemetery in Charlottesville, officiated by Pastor Tom Williams and Charles Simmons. A memorial service will be held at the Charlottesville Church of the Brethren, 1225 East Rio Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22901, on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, and at John's request, donations may be made to the Fluvanna County SPCA, 5239 Union Mills Rd, Troy, VA 22974.
