Kathyrne MacEwen Obituary

1935-2015 Kathyrne Rita MacEwen (nee MacInnis), 79 of London Grove Township, Pennsylvania, passed away on July 6, 2015 after a long and courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia. Born and raised in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Rita was the daughter of Mary Anastasia Power MacInnis and Roderick MacInnis. Antigonish is a quaint town that is the home of St. Francis Xavier University. Rita attended Mount St. Bernard School through high school and after graduation she attended St. Martha’s School of Nursing and graduated in 1957. The Hospital and Nursing school were located at one end of town and the University was at the other. In 1954 she met Peter MacEwen who was an engineering student at the University and four years later they were married in 1958. Rita first worked at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and later after their three children were in high school she worked as the Director of Nursing at the Linden Hall Skill care facility of the Friends Boarding Home in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. On March 26, 1995, Rita Became a U.S. citizen at a Naturalization Ceremony held at the Courthouse in Media, Delaware County and many of her friends were there to witness the event. After living in Thornbury Township, Delaware County for 30 years, Rita and Pete moved to Traditions at Inniscrone, in London Grove Township, Chester County in 2001. Rita and Pete both enjoyed vacationing in Nova Scotia and in Englewood, Florida where they had a second home for many years. After retirement, Rita took up golf and enjoyed it until her illness struck in May 2014. She had many interests including knitting, crocheting, bowling, and bingo. When she was young, she enjoyed ice skating like most Nova Scotia girls, but most of all she loved being involved with her children and grandchildren who all lived within thirty minutes of her. The MacEwen family is grateful for the care provided to Rita by Dr. James Mangan, Dr. Alexander Perl, and the oncology nursing staff at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She was the beloved wife of Peter K. MacEwen for 57 years; mother of Brian P. MacEwen of Glen Mills, PA, Kathyrne Lynne Quinn (husband Terrance Quinn) of Glen Mills, and Honora Diane DiMarco (husband Donald DiMarco) of East Bradford Township, Chester County. Rita was especially close to her five grandchildren Allison MacEwen Windle (Luke Windle), Steven MacEwen Quinn, Daniel Kimble DiMarco, James Duncan DiMarco and Thomas Joseph DiMarco. She was so happy to be able to see and hold her great-granddaughter, Lyla Grace Windle who was born on March 14, 2015. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Eileen Ballah of Sydney, Nova Scotia and was pre-deceased by two brothers, Robert J. MacInnis and Hugh MacInnis of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. She will be missed by her three sisters in law, Jean Dean (Gordon Dean) and Janet Young (Thomas Young) , both of Englewood, Florida and Betty MacInnis of Antigonish, Nova Scotia and many nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States. Dear Pete and Family,

Rita was one of the sweetest and best friends anyone could ever want. My life was richer for so many years because she was such a part of it. She made everything we did together FUN! Golfing brought us together and the game will never be the same without her. She turned our golfing foursome into a craft class. She taught us so much. I loved her wit (we had real "belly-laughs"), her creativity, but most of all, her gentle spirit. I rejoice with all of you knowing that Heaven is her new home.!

With Love and Sympathy,
Min Pusey
