Doris Miller Obituary
Peekskill, NY: Born on May 29th, 1927 in Rochester, New York. Raised in Rochester as well and attended Saint Michael's and Nazareth Academy. Died surrounded by loved ones three weeks shy of age 88, peacefully, of natural causes, unrelated to 72 years of smoking, as Mom wished to convey, on May 6th, 2015 in Peekskill, New York. She leaves her brother, Reverend Edwin B. Metzger of Rochester NY; Son Ted S. Miller (Abigail Adams) residing in Chappaqua NY; Daughter Amelia E. Simmons (Stephen) (Amy's Ice Creams, Austin, Texas); Grandchildren Emma and Olivia Bleker, Henry Simmons and Madeline Adams-Miller (a descendant of John and Abigail). Her former husband, Kenneth L. Miller of San Diego, predeceased her in August of 2014. The family also wishes to acknowledge Doris' wonderful caregiver, Elaine.
Doris had an insatiable desire to learn. She attended Brockport State Teachers College (Phys. Ed. And was in training for US Olympics Women's Gymnastics) and went on to receive degrees and advanced degrees in Experimental Psychology from The George Washington University, The University of Michigan, and Bryn Mawr College, Ph.D (A.B.D.)
As a member of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry faculty she taught, did instructional research, conducted workshops and designed instructional materials for dental and dental graduate students and for faculty. An avid patriot, proud libertarian, brilliant thinker, Mom will be dearly missed. Her ashes will be interred at the family summer home on the Pilgrims' First Encounter Beach, Cape Cod, MA, where she enjoyed smoking, thinking, rooting loudly for the female Indy 500 competitors, and spending time with her grandchildren and family.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Charles Borromeo, 3003 Dewey Avenue, Rochester, NY, on Monday, July 13th, 2015 at 10:30am. A luncheon for family and friends will follow the service, at which the location is to be announced.
