James Hendy Obituary

Hendy, James B.

Webster: October 15, 2014 at age 71 after a year-long battle with cancer. Predeceased by his parents. Survived by his wife of 46 years, Irene; son, Robert B. (Gretchen) Hendy; daughter, Patricia (Michael) Fischer; grandchildren, Teagan Hendy, Gavin Fischer and Caroline Hendy; and his loyal dog, Angus.

James was born in Troy, NY and overcame many early hardships in his life. He started his working career as an overnight radiological technologist at Rochester General Hospital, eventually becoming the Director of Radiology before retiring in 2005. In his retirement, Jim and his wife enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren, and enjoyed numerous trips to the Caribbean and Europe.

James was a devout NY Giants and NY Yankees fan, and frequently went to see them play. James was also a frequent road runner, having completed 58 marathons along with hundreds of road races. In his 40 years of running, Jim logged thousands of miles, many with friends.

Friends may call Sunday, Oct. 19, 4-7 PM, at the funeral chapel (1031 Ridge Rd.) where a Funeral Service will be held Monday at 11AM. Interment at Webster Union Cemetery. Friends are encouraged to wear a pair of running shoes instead of formal footwear. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim's memory to Mary Cariola Children's Center or Lollypop Farm. Irene, Patty & Bobby, I am so sorry to hear about Jim. This has been a most horrible year. Not only were you two the best to work with, Irene, you got called "Mom" even before I did. You & Jim were always Derek's "other" parents. I know Jim will take care of him till we're all together again. All our love, Debbie & Steve

Jim hired me in 1973 to work as a transporter in Radiology at RGH. Without his belief in me as a 16 year old, I probably never would have gone on to a successful 35 year career at the hospital. He always had interesting and insightful messages to deliver, was funny and made people laugh all the time. In later years, he was a mentor for many with his passion for running including myself. I am already thinking about my next race and dedicating it to "Mr. Marathon" Irene, Patty, and Bob my deepest condolences for your loss. Jim left his mark in this short stopover point for us, a great husband, father, family man, friend, and a person that we can all step up and take notice of as someone we would be proud to model ourselves after. Jim, I will miss you greatly.

Mr. Hendy was one of my first bosses I ever had. I enjoyed working because he was such a great guy with such a great sense of humor. My heart goes out to the Hendy family and hope that with prayer and family support they will find comfort...God Bless

Irene, my sincere condolences. Jim was a great friend so many years ago when I was at RGH and you both were keeping me out of trouble with the techs. Great memories of biking around Webster and along the barge canal. Getting me to run. Hanging around the pool in the summer with the kids listening to Phil Rizzuto's Yankee's broadcasts. Valued memories.

Irene, Patty and Bob, You will be in my thoughts tomorrow. Like I said to you today, we all grew up together-the 70's, 80's, 90's -all the good years in Radiology. We were a family. I will never forget Jim and his kindness to my family and myself. You will continue to be in my prayers. Debbie Place

Irene, Patty, Bob and family,
Having worked so closely with Jim for many years at RGH, I felt I really got to know him so personally. He was kind, funny, and so serious about his work and so passionate about his family. I watched him many times as he would so proudly tell me about his vacations w Irene, Runs w Bob, the kids dating and marriages and of course the grandchildren! He loved you all so deeply. He was dedicated to his work, to the dept, to RGH but most of all to his family. He was truly a wonderful husband, father, grandfather And a friend to so many. My sincere condolences to all of you.

Jim was my sisters manager. It was a happy time for all. He was kind, fair, ethical, and treated everyone with respect. Everyone admired Jim. When he retired, it was sad to see him go. Now, he is running with the angels. We'll all see him again someday in Heaven. RIP, Jim Condolences to his family and friends who loved him. Linda

Jim and I ran many races over those forty years. He loved running and even more, loved getting into a new age group, even though they seemed to get more competitive as he got older. 70 was his most looked forward to age. As he said, he was "really cleaning up" at 70.I always thought his favorite race was the Webster TT (that, and his ridiculous turkey hat he wore every year). When he was ill, Jim said his goal was to run the Turkey Trot this year. His gang will be running for him and with him this Thanksgiving.
He loved running with his son and always wanted to talk about his family.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Jim, the roads are flat, the wind is at your back and every race is a pr.
