Alfred Coco Obituary

Alfred Joseph "Al" Coco, 84, was known for his keen intellect, kind heart, incredible sense of humor, and passionate love of animals, children, and most of all Joyce - his best friend and wife of 64 years. Al never met a stranger - greeting each person, from law school president to grocery clerk, always as a friend. Born Feb. 28, 1933 in Moreauville, LA, Al's struggle with Alzheimer's ended on Dec. 14, 2017, with family at his side. Al grew up in Cajun Louisiana and spun delightful stories of hunting in the swamps, speaking French to defy his teachers, and delivering the news as a paperboy during World War II. A graduate of the Univ. of Texas ('57), St. Mary's School of Law ('60), Univ. of Washington ('62), he taught Law at St. Mary's San Antonio, the Univ. of Houston and the Univ. of Denver where he led the DU Law Library and served as director of the DU Graduate School of Librarianship and Master of Law Librarianship programs. Upon retirement, Al was appointed DU Professor Emeritus of Law. Although he taught hundreds of students over four decades, Al was much more than a professor. He was a mentor and role model for prominent lawyers and law librarians nationwide. Al Coco is survived by wife Joyce, son Brandon (Holly), grandchildren Michael, Grayson (Kaisey), Elisabeth, and Riley. He was preceded in death by his son Paul and parents Fulgence and Velma. Memorial service to be held 2 pm, Sun., Jan. 28 at the DU Sturm College of Law, 2255 E. Evans Ave.

My favorite memory of Uncle Coco was his warm hugs and loving smile he shared with everyone. May Jesus' perpetual light of Christ shine upon you. May your soul be purified and may you rest in peace with Jesus. Thank you for being such a wonderful role model. I will miss you.

On behalf of Al's former neighborhood - Belcaro Park in Denver - people who remember his many years as a neighbor mourn his passing. Al contributed with energy and professionalism to the Belcaro Park Homeowners Association, and was well liked by all who knew him.

So sorry to hear about Al's passing... growing up down the street from the Coco's, their family was always there and the greatest of friends from grade school, through college at DU with Brandon and my #1 Groomsman at my wedding. My early memories of Al are with a pipe in one hand and a helpful and wonderful story to tell and of Joyce always nearby offering a sandwich and a fresh lemonade. I know he will be greatly missed. You all are in our thoughts and prayers... may the Lord bring you comfort knowing that he is in Heaven, and we will see him again. May God bless and be with you all.

I am truly sorry for your loss. May our heavenly Father wrap His arms of comfort around all the family and friends, as you come together to mourn such a precious life. May He grant you the strength to support each other as He guides you through this difficult time. My sincere condolences.

I enjoyed working with Professor Coco as his research assistant from 1981-83. Professor Coco was a wonderful mentor and a kind person. I do my best to emulate him in working with my research assistants all these years later. I owe my academic career, in part, to people like Professor Coco.

My deepest sympathies to his family and colleagues.
