Alice Braithwaite Obituary

October 13, 1916 ~ January 1, 2014
Alice Todd Braithwaite, 97, died on January 1, 2014, in Cedar City, Utah.
Alice was born on October 13, 1916 in Talmage, Utah to Douglas and Margaret Todd. She was delivered in a two-room log cabin built by her father, a homesteader in the Uintah Basin. The family moved many times during her childhood, living in the towns of Talmage, Kanab, and Midvale, among other places. Times were lean, but the family thrived and flourished. Alice and her sisters Florence Britsch, Beth Snow, Norma Maybe, Elaine Page, and brothers Burton, Bob, Ira, and Byron Todd remained close throughout their lives.
Alice graduated from Jordan High School and attended Brigham Young University (class of 1938) where she was active in student government. Some of her happiest memories were the BYU days spent with her sisters, brothers-in-law, and future husband.
She married Royden C. Braithwaite on June 9, 1938 in the Manti Temple. Together they raised four children, Douglas (Jan), Karl (Jane), Robert (Arlene), and Elaine (Burke) Jolley. A daughter, Beverly, was lost in childbirth. Alice and Royden had fifteen grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband.
Alice was an accomplished educator, a person with wide interests, and had a persevering energy faithful to her pioneer roots. She taught first grade for twenty-two years at North Elementary in Cedar City, touching the lives of more than 600 students. To this day, former students approach her children and mention what a kind and positive influence she was in their lives. She served in many civic callings, including as the president of the Valley View Hospital Board, and as a member of the BYU Alumni Board, Cedar City Library Board, Cedar City Music Arts, and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. As a life-long active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in many church positions, including much-loved callings in Sunday School and Young Women.
When her husband Royden was president of Southern Utah State College, she enjoyed welcoming faculty and students into her home for beginning socials, and Christmas and graduation receptions.
Alice will be remembered fondly by all of those who knew her as an energetic person filled with a zest for life and a ready smile.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 1:00 pm, Cedar City 9th Ward, 256 South 900 West, Cedar City, Utah. A viewing will be held at the same location, prior to funeral services, from 11:30-12:30 pm. Interment will be in the Cedar City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.

Elaine, I am so sad to hear about your mother. She was such a fun lady, I just loved being at your house. I have many fond memories of her. I just expected her to always be around. Know that we are thinking of you and your family at this time.

Dear Judge Braithwaite, Arlene and Family,

What a brilliant, funny, kind and fascinating person...and the best neighbor ever. I never spoke to her that she didn't make me laugh and her smile was legendary. She lived a great life and those of us who were fortunate to know her are richer and wiser. Scott, Alice and Carly Burns.

On behalf of the Virgil and Frances James family, we extend our sincere condolences to the Braithwaite family on the loss of dear Alice. Royden and Alice were great friends of my parents, Virgil and Frances, and became more like family while at Cornell University. Virgil passed away in 1985 and Frances in 1993; they continued a friendship with the Braithwaite family until the end of their lives. While I was not yet born during those years in Ithaca, NY, I've heard the many stories and fond remembrances. I'm sure they're all rekindling their friendship now. May you all be comforted in celebrating the wonderful life of Alice Todd Braithwaite.

Doug and Karl, I extend my sympathy at the loss of your mother. I remember when you moved to Cedar City. I alway considered your parents as pillars in the community and real examples of all that was good and worthwhile in life. I remember with gladness playing football for the Redmen with you. I know your faith will sustain you and you will find comfort knowing she is once again with her beloved companion. Dr. E. Reed Heywood, West Virginia

It was always exciting when we went to Cedar City, but I didn't really get to know Aunt Alice until I lived with the Braithwaites for a few weeks the year I attended CSU. She made me part of everything. Trusted me and encouraged me. I could always expect a smile and a lot of news when I would stop by. I miss her.

Doug and Karl:

As soon as I saw the obituary for your Mom I started remembering what a kick she was when she visited Doug and Jan a number of years ago. It's always sad to see our parents move on but it's also often a blessing for them. Condolences to both of you and your families.

Mrs. Braithwaite was my First Grade Teacher. She was a true inspiration in my life. While in class she knew I had an interest in dinosaurs, so much so that we studied dinosaurs and created posters to be placed around the classroom. Several years later when I was married, she gave me a book on dinosaurs as a gift. I will never forget this wonderful lady.

Aunt Alice was amazing and the most generous host. Her home was opened to anyone traveling back and forth to California or where ever they were going. Most my wonderful childhood memories are with the Braithwaites. Alice could whip up a breakfast better than anyone. She will definitely be missed. Love you Aunt Alice forever.
