George LaVon Stokes
1931 ~ 2019
Our dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather George LaVon Stokes, age 87, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2019 with family by his side. Born March 16, 1931 in Tremonton, UT to Oleen and Fern Austin Stokes, George graduated from Logan High School and attended Utah State Agricultural College until January 29, 1952, when he married Frances Fullmer. He served 2 years in the United States Army and then returned to Utah State, graduating in 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering. George and Fran raised their four children in Bellevue, WA, Granada Hills, CA, Vancouver, WA, and Orem. George pursued a career in engineering and sales, eventually settling in Orem where he enjoyed a hobby of restoring military vehicles and civic engagement, serving as President of Kiwanis and in American Legion Post 72, where he organized the public Honor Guard. George was a dedicated member of the Utah Chapter of The Military Vehicle Collectors Club and enjoyed supporting Wasatch Front community events. He served on the American Freedom Festival Parade Committee, was a BYU George Q. Canon honoree and recipient of the SCERA Star Award for Volunteerism. He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in numerous teaching and leadership positions over his lifetime. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, children Laurie Stokes Bott (Evan), Scott Stokes (Kimberly), Craig Stokes (Jeannetta), Paula McDowell (Jim), his brother Glen Stokes, 15 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister, and 2 grandchildren.
An evening viewing will be held Friday, March 1st, 2019 from 6:00 - 8:00pm at the Sundberg-Olpin Funeral Home at 495 S. State, Orem. On Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 a viewing from will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 followed by funeral services at 11:00 at the Heather Ridge Stake Center, 450 E. 2000 North, Orem, Utah. Interment to follow at Orem Cemetery with Military Honors by the American Legion Post 72. Condolences may be expressed to the family at SundbergOlpinMortuary.com

We remember you so well from Granada Hills. George was in our Bishopric and you lived just a few blocks from our Louise Ave. home.

We have often thought of you. George was a favorite of ours, as were you, Fran.
