Joseph Bennett Obituary

Joseph Jones Bennett
1932 ~ 2016
God loaned us Dad for 83 years, now his wonderful contract is up and a long awaited Bennett family reunion convened at Heaven's Gate with his father, mother, brother, sister, and his Heavenly Father.
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather, Joseph Jones Bennett, entered into eternal rest on February 27, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Having finished his work on earth, he departed this world bound for the next with great anticipation. Joe the youngest of 3 children was born on April 16th, 1932, in Salt Lake City, Utah to William Oliver Bennett and Mary Elizabeth Jones Bennett.
Joe attended the University of Utah earning his Bachelor's degree. A dedicated teacher, he worked in the Salt Lake City School District at Hillside Middle School for 39 years as a mathematics teacher and curriculum specialist. Dedicated to his profession, many students acquired a love for mathematics under his tutelage and went onto successful careers. He also enjoyed interacting with people as he drove tour buses during the summer and on weekends. His entertaining knowledge of the city was shared with many as he was among the select few to drive during the Winter Olympics.
Joe married the "Love of his Life" Loma Diane Straley, on 26 December 1978 followed by an eternal solemn sealing ceremony in the Jordan River Temple on October 26th, 2004.
Beloved and respected by many for his honesty, integrity, humor, humility, and devotion to family and Christ's teachings. Joe is remembered for his generosity, selfless spirit and willingness to help those in need. He was truly a remarkable man. He knew that he was a son of God and strived to live in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his loving wife Loma; children JoLyn (Harold) Foerster, Kevin (Becky) Bennett, David (Laura) Bennett, Lianne Ashby, Melanie (Wes) Monroe, Chris Thompson, Harmony (Richard) Kunz, and Tami (Marlow) Jones; along with 24 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father William Oliver Bennett; mother Mary Elizabeth Jones Bennett; brother Oliver Jones Bennett; and sister Barbara Jones Bennett English.
Friends may call upon the family for a celebration of Joe's life on Friday evening March 4th, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East Salt Lake City. Please use complimentary valet parking provided on the north side of the building. A private family graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 5th at 10:00 AM at the Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 East 4580 South Salt Lake City. Mr Bennett was my all-time favorite teacher! He taught me both in 7th and 9th grades, between September 1972 & June 1975. He had a way of making each of his students feel as if they were his favorite. He had a gift for helping EVERY student learn math. I am so grateful for his influence and friendship. He made me feel like I was his friend when he came to my wedding reception. I brought my son with me to visit him at Hillside the day before we moved to California. That was 31 years ago! My sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones. Although I am much saddened to learn of his passing, it brings joy to my heart to learn that he embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ! Families are forever!

God Bless,
Jami McAllister Larsen

I was one of Mr. Bennett's remedial math students at Hillside Jr. High. Every morning before school began, he would answer my questions and provide much needed encouragement so that I might progress to the next level. I do not believe that I would have ever been able to move on to complete graduate school had it not been for his dedication. Thank you Mr. Bennett, from your srudent Nancy Tannenbaum.

I know it says he taught math - but I swear he was my 7th grade Science/Health teacher at Hillside Jr. High. I still remember all the bones of my body - because he made learning so exciting and wonderful and he was so proud of each of us. Also, I rode on his bus trips to ski at Brighton. Funnest trips in the whole world. I loved that man and could tell he loved each of us. I look back now at the respect he showed each of us and earned that respect in return. I ran across this looking for someone else. I am so happy I saw this to show him the HONOR and LOVE I have always felt towards him. I know he is in Heaven celebrating - because that is just what he earned. I LOVE MR. BENNETT......

He was a wonderful teacher at Hillside Junior High. I had him as my home room accelerated math teacher in the 7th grade and I still remember many of the algebra principles that he taught us at that time. He leaves a great legacy. My condolences.

It has been many, many years since I have seen my Uncle Joe, but I have always considered him my favorite Uncle. As a young girl, he would toss me in the air and was always so friendly and fun to be around. We played horse shoes out at the Wright cabin. I have nothing but fond memories of Uncle Joe.
