Patt Brown Obituary

1938-2014
Sylvia Patricia Crow Brown, 75, passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2014. Patt was born May 5, 1938 in Ogden UT. She was adopted at age three by her parents Thomas F. Crow and Marian Lomax Crow and subsequently sealed in the Mesa Temple. Patt always felt grateful both to her birth parents for their sacrifice and to her adoptive parents for giving her a loving, eternal family. She was raised in Independence, MO, graduated from William Chrisman High and attended BYU. Met W. Kay Brown on March 31, 1956 and courted by long distance for nearly 2 years. They lived 186 miles apart but were together nearly every weekend. Patt then went to Utah to attend BYU but after one semester, Kay drove from MO to get her and convince her to come home and marry him. They were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple March 7, 1958. A wonderful wife, mother, home maker and cook, she had all her 16 children and grandchildren to dinner nearly every Sunday and took them out to dinner nearly every Thursday. Whatever she brought to an event was the most spectacular thing there. She allowed Kay to take furniture out of the living room every December and January to convert it to a train room for the neighborhood families to enjoy. She loved to travel in the family motorhomes visiting 40 states, DC, Mexico and Canada over a 20 year period. Despite being terrified of water she made 80 trips to Lake Powell over a 32 year period in the family boat, Rice Pudding--named for her signature breakfast. A lifelong member of the LDS Church, she had a strong testimony and served in many callings in the ward and stake Primary and Relief Society where her perpetual smile and bubbly personality were enjoyed by everyone. She served as ward compassionate service leader for 10 years but her favorite job was as primary chorister. She so loved that position that when she was released from it to become a Relief Society secretary, she cried so much that she was allowed to stay in Primary instead. Patt spent her life raising her three children, taking care of her family and enjoying her grandchildren. She attended countless little league games, band concerts and choir concerts. She would drop everything and knock herself out to help with a school or church project. She built an amazing "Dumbo" float for a parade-with some help from Kay-from the ground up in her driveway. She sewed beautifully and her children were never allowed to have a store bought costumes-no matter how much they wanted one-because she knew she could make one better. She believed life was fun and never took herself too seriously. Hers was a life of joy and service to others. Like the George Bailey family we have had a wonderful life, lived in a drafty old two story house and didn't have any money.
Survived by loving husband Kay, son Christopher (Lynette) and Henry (3); son Kerry (Zanna), Tessa (6), Kai (4) and baby girl (due in May) all of Draper; daughter Heather Heil (Mike), Lindsey Hammon (serving a mission in New Zealand), Brooklynn Hammon (serving a mission in Japan), Lucas (10), Brighton (9), Tierney (6) of American Fork; brother Robert Crow (Hanh), Prairie Village, KS; sister Shirley Brooks, Belmont, CA; and her beloved brothers and sisters-in-law and countless friends she loved dearly.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 8, 2014 at 11:00am at the Rosecrest Second Ward, 3101 South 2300 East. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday evening from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church on Wednesday morning from 9:30am to 10:30am prior to services. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. On line tributes and comments can be posted for the family at www.holbrookmortuary.com

Dear Brown family, I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Sister Brown. While growing up in the Rosecrest 2nd ward I will always remember her smile as she would walk into church. I also loved having Sister Brown as the chorister in Primary, she made singing time so fun.

Bishop Brown, I will never forget the kindness you showed to me and my kids while living in the ward and going through some difficult times, Iwill always be greatful to you.

I have so many fond memories of Patt, I lived next door (actually over the back fence) when I was young, I spent so many happy hours in her home. She was always so kind and comforting to me especially when my own mom was in the hospital with cancer. I remember the last time I saw Patt, it was about 22 years ago, I was in a JoAnn's Fabric store and we ran into each other, sweet Patt recognized me and through tears told me how much she missed and loved my mom. Again she made me feel so good, and brought a happy memory to me. I will always love and appreciate Patt.

Sister Brown was a wonderful and special lady. She had a way of making you feel special while in her presence. She will be missed but not forgotten.

Dear Kay and the rest of the Brown Family, I will not be able to attend the services for Patt, because of illness. I certainly wanted to be there; Jean, as you know, is on the other side of the veil, but I would represent her and myself. May the Lord bless all of you as you celebrate the life of Patt. She completed so well her Second Estate. May we all do the same, Love, Richard E. Turley, Sr.

Dear Brown Family -

Our hearts and prayers go out to you at this time. We only knew Pat for a short time, but we are better for having known her. She was funny, witty and fun to be around. We also appreciate all of the love and friendship she extended to our son Tyler. Pat (and the entire Brown and Heil families) treated Ty like one of her own. Pat will always be his adopted grandma.

Again, our love and prayers go out to you.

Dear Kay, Chris, Heather and Kerry, I am saddened to read of Patt's passing. She was truly an elect lady and a beautiful example to me. I loved her smile and she always made me feel so welcome. It was a privilege to live in the Rosecrest 2nd ward and work in Primary with Patt. May you all find peace and comfort in the memories you have and in the testimonies each of you radiate of the Plan of Salvation. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Marilyn Sheffield Hendriksen

Kay and family -

We are so very sorry for your loss. The strength of Kay and Patt's marriage, and the strong familial life that the family leads, has inspired me and my family in so very many ways.

I recall with a smile how the brightest spot in my Monday mornings was to see if any extra delicious rolls made by Patt and Kay were leftover from your family dinners. They seemed to hit the spot perfectly on any Monday morning.

Please know that Patt inspired many around her, even those who did not get the opportunity to know her well. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.

Love,
Wes and Kristina Allen (and their kids who still to this day talk about the "Christmas trains" and the wonderful people who let us play with them)

Dear Kay & Family, I was sad to read this obituary. We were neighbors for a long time and I loved you and Pat so much. She had such a beautiful smile and made everyone around her happy. I am sorry that I won't be able to see you this week and give my condolences in person, my husband and I are serving a mission in Suriname. I send my love and sympathy to all of you. Love, Connie Hale

Those sparkly blue eyes, red hair and a smile that was ever present welcomed many into her home while they were away from their families attending Ricks and BYU during holidays and extended weekend breaks. So many memories made with the Brown family over the years, all of them wonderful. Truly, raising her children and watching her grandchildren grow into beautiful people is what brought her and her sweet husband true joy. Prayers and hugs to all the family.

What do you say about a darling lady who sparkled when she entered the room. It was simply an honor and blessing to share life with her. Her family was her JOY! Her talent was the creative details she put forth in all of her projects - that translated into her love for those she served. My most sincere condolences for her entire family. Patt was an original! Much love
