Trudy Shipley Obituary

Trudy (Torborg) Shipley
10/02/1934 ~ 8/07/2018
Salt Lake CIty, Utah-Trudy (Torborg Hegelstad) Shipley, a much beloved matriarch and the anchor of our family passed away suddenly from metastatic colon cancer on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at the age of 83.
Trudy was born near the fjØrds of Stavanger, Norway on October 2nd, 1934. She was the third child in a family of six. She grew up on a farm where she learned the value of hard work and devotion to her family. She endured the German occupation of Norway during WWII and learned to be resourceful and strong as a result. Following her graduation from high school, she attended business school in Stavanger and then immigrated to America where she met and fell in love with her husband Keith D. Shipley (deceased). They were married for 40 years.
She worked for many years in retail where she gained a reputation as an excellent manager and salesperson. Trudy took up marathon (26K) running after retirement at the age of 62, competing locally and in states across the country. She ran with a wonderful group of friends and always remembered this time with great fondness. Trudy continued running marathons until she was nearly 80, at which time she began power walking. Trudy also had a passion for traveling and learning about the world, which made her a very interesting companion and friend.
Trudy will tell you, if she had the chance, that her most noteworthy accomplishment was raising her four children. She poured her love into each child and instilled in them a sense of confidence, dedication, and a desire to do good. She taught them the importance of both a good education and a good character, and she tirelessly supported them through good times and bad. She is deeply loved and respected by her children and now her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We will carry her example, love, and confidence throughout our lives.
Trudy is survived by four siblings (Ingrid, Ove, Einar Hegelstad, Judy Bullough Lawrence), four children, Ellen (David Knell), Lisa (Thomas Brown), Annie Brazell (David Winters), and Eric (Stephanie Shipley), 14 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, her sister Olaug, her husband Keith, and her granddaughter Erica.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2018, at 11:00 am at the Wasatch Lawn chapel located at 3401 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, UT. Visitations will be held from 10:00-10:45 am prior to the funeral. Interment at Wasatch Lawn immediately following. See www.wasatchlawn.com.

Dear aunt Torborg,
I was so sad to hear that you passed away. I remember you as a happy, interesting and beautiful woman - with much love to give to those around you. I still remember that you told us as children that we were precious, and that's how you made us feel.
The last time I saw you, a few years ago, we all went for a hike to Prekestolen, and you were in such good shape, amazing!
I wish I would have had the opportunity to visit you in America, or that I could have seen you more often here in Norway.
My deepest condolences to your Family. Rest in peace dear Torborg, I will cherish the memory of you.

I'm so sorry to hear of Torborg's passing. She was such a great lady and I always loved talking to her. She has raised an incredible family. Unfortunately, we will have to miss the wedding because we will be out of town for our daughter's wedding. Much love to the Shipley family!

Hello: I was sad to hear that Trudy had passed away. It has been a while since she visited my mom, Marilee in Anchorage where she was running a mayoral marathon which we all admired her for at her age! I have the most fond memories of Trudy. As kids our parents celebrated many occasions together and they always put the kids first which made life very special. Trudy always treated us like family in good times and bad she was strong and beautiful.
Always know that Trudy will stay near to our hearts. May she rest in peace.

Our condolences to the family.
