Leslie Luick Obituary

Leslie "Oppy" Luick

Ankeny

Leslie "Oppy" Robert Luick, 72, of Ankeny passed away February 16, 2015 at Mercy Hospice, surrounded by family.

A funeral mass will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 20th, at Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Church. A visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday February 19th at Memorial Services of Iowa chapel (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd).

Les was born in Des Moines on November 2, 1942 to Harry and Ruth Luick. After his biological mother passed away, he was lovingly raised by his dad and Margaret Luick. He had four sisters and one brother. He graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 1961. His good fortune was to encounter Mary Luick and to have the good sense to marry a woman with love and determination that knows no bounds. Both Mary and Les worked at John Deere before retiring. They raised their kids to not only have a hard work ethic and to root for the underdog, but to also be water skiing fanatics, rebels with causes, moguls (ha!), and a gift for fun-loving pranks. Oppy's eyes were never brighter than when his grandchildren were around, with whom he had endless patience, good times, and road trips galore!

Les had so many gifts and so many friends, too many to name. Needless to say, life will never be the same for any of them. He will be remembered for his welcome and open hand, kind heart, willing laugh, and warm smile.

He is survived by his wife Mary and their children, Teresa Preston (Brian Brankis), Melanie Luick-Martins (Vitor), Nick Luick (Amanda). His grandchildren will carry his proud legacy forward, they are: Blaine Brankis, Cole Preston, Kennedy Preston (Des Moines); Isabella, Lucas, and Tiago Luick-Martins (Accra, Ghana); and Tyson Luick and Kade Luick (Ankeny). He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were with him until the very end.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice, Embrace Iowa, or St. Jude Hospital.

First of all, let me say how sorry I was to find out that Les had passed. I just happened to think about him this evening, and decided to look him up.

I worked with Les at the P&J Kawasaki motorcycle shop on Hubbell Ave. in Des Moines for a time back in the 1970's. I worked side by side with him for several months before I discovered he only had one thumb! He never mentioned it, never needed help with some task that needed done, he just did it!

I was a few years younger than him at the time, and I remember very well thinking about how dedicated a worker he was. Working at the cycle shop, and working at John Deere, too. Not to mention his 'boat' time. He always had a great attitude, and usually a funny joke or story to tell.

Best Wishes to you,
Mick Dawson

I remember always riding on the lake with him driving and me sitting a t the back about to go tubing. I also remember me him going so fast when I was tubing and me yelling to slow down but he would just accelerate.

- I will never forget you,
Lucas
