Richard D. Means

Mingo

Richard D. Means, a resident of Mingo, Iowa died Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Visitation will be held at the Mingo United Methodist Church 202 East Main Street from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday February 12. Funeral service will follow on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine in Altoona, Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown or the Mingo United Methodist Church. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

Dick was born in 1929 to Lewis and Mildred Means in Lorimor, Iowa. He graduated from Mingo High School in 1947. He married a Mingo local, Benita (Bonnie) Maher in 1948 and went on to serve in occupied Germany during the Korean Conflict. Richard and Bonnie were blessed with four children, Diane (Dr. William) Suval of Apple Valley, California, Susette (Robert) Williams of West Des Moines, Debra (Marshall) Jackson of Mingo, and Rick (Leslie) Means also of Mingo. Dick worked as a machinist/ fabricator for over 40 years and retired from AL Tec in Elkhart in 1994. He led a long and active life as a member of the Mingo American Legion, a Mason with the East Gate Lodge, a Brother with the Za-Ga-Gig Shrine (Greeters Unit) and a long time member of the Scottish Rite Heritage Society. His passion for fishing was only surpassed by his love of family.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his children; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Mike (Donna) Means of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin and Bob (Jan) Means of Lorimor, Iowa.

A luncheon and wake will commence in celebration of Dick's life following the church service. It will be held at the Mingo Community Center, 200 East Railroad.

Sue & Bob we were planning on being at the funeral tomorrow but just got a call from Davenport that Tom's sister was rushed to the hospital with a colon blockage so we are leaving in the morning to go to Davenport. I'm so sorry we will miss the funeral but you both know are thoughts and prayers are with you and your entire family. Give your mom a huge hug from us and tell Uncle Mike and Aunt Donna hello
