ROBERT G. HAND

West Des Moines

Robert G. Hand, 82, died peacefully August 12, 2010 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center of respiratory and kidney failure. Funeral services are 10 a.m., Wednesday, at Meredith Drive Reformed Church with Rev. Tony Vis officiating. He will be interred at the Des Moines Masonic Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Evelyn; his three daughters, Gail (Richard) Lund of Johnston, Vicky (Yotin) Keonin of Lake City, and Terry (Mark) Krantz of Osage Beach, Missouri; seven grandchildren, John Lund, Lauren Lund, Jason (Lindsey) Keonin, Adam Keonin, Muffie Keonin, Sarah (Scott) Barbier, and Stephen Krantz; and one sister, Maxine Atkinson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Frederic, sisters, Shirley Smith and Inez Beattie; and an infant brother.

Bob was born October 4, 1927, in Collins, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Clara (Vasey) Hand. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1945 and served in the Navy prior to attending the AIB College of Business. He married Evelyn (Apple) in Nevada on September 21, 1951 and they have been lifelong residents of Des Moines. Bob worked at Dahl's Foods starting in 1952, eventually becoming CEO prior to retiring in 1993.

He also served one year as the president of the National Grocers Association. He was active in many groups, including Reciprocity and the Masons, and was a member of the Meredith Drive Reformed Church. He and Evelyn spent time vacationing in Arizona and Osage Beach, and were living at Edgewater in West Des Moines. Bob enjoyed boating and golf, but he was happiest while spending time with his family.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday at Westover Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Food Bank of Iowa.
