Carla Mullins

1938 - 2013

Carla Faire Mullins, 75, died at her home in Hurst on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013. She overcame great adversity and two decades of illness, but ultimately succumbed to heart disease that surfaced when she was 49 years old. Memorial service: Following a graveside service at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, a memorial service will be held at noon Monday at Shady Oaks Baptist Church of Hurst. In loving memory of Carla Mullins Carla was born June 24, 1938, in San Angelo. Her father, Edward A. Vautrain, served as the mayor of San Angelo, and her mother, Verna Chapman Vautrain, served at First Baptist Church of San Angelo for many years. Carla was preceded in death by her brother, Lynn Dale "Lindy" Vautrain, on Jan. 31, 2012. She graduated from San Angelo Central High School and went on to attend Arizona State University and the University of Hawaii. Carla married Maurice Mullins in San Angelo. She loved being a mother and enjoyed decorating, antiquing, shopping and hosting extravagant Christmas celebrations. Cherry pound cake, homemade marshmallows and raspberry cheesecake were her signature desserts. Her children were always secure in her tenacious love and loyalty. With the exception of two years in New Jersey, Carla lived in Texas her entire life. To her family, friends and doctors, she was considered to be a champion at beating the odds! Carla was fun and lively, and known for her wonderful sense of humor as well as her passion for gardening. She was a National Flower Show judge for the state of Texas for many years and a member of the San Angelo Garden Club. Survivors: Husband, Maurice; children, Holly Marcella Mullins of Hurst, Trent Kendall Mullins and his wife, Patti, of Anchorage, Alaska, Brett Edward Mullins and his wife, Nancy, of Flower Mound and Misty Faire Carder and her husband, Kevin Carder, of Corinth; and grandchildren, Elijah, 18, Megan, 16, Kendall, 17, Dagan, 15, Caroline, 14, Morgan, 13, Samuel, 11, Reese, 12, and Connor, 12.
