Herman Cofer

1935 - 2015

Herman "Jack" Cofer, 79, a mountain of a man, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2015. Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Greenwood. Jack was born Oct. 16, 1935, in Cullman, Ala., where he grew up as a cotton picker. From a family of seven, he helped provide for his family from an early age. At the age of 18, standing tall and very proud at 6'7", he signed up for the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Sumter, S.C., where he met the petite love of his life, Rosa, while she was serving him dinner at the local dinette. The two fell in love, and in 1957, their love story began. After serving 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and traveling the world, Herman retired as a technical sergeant in 1974 at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Wash. He then moved his family to White Settlement to settle down and make roots. After his military career, Herman worked as a security officer with Kelly Moore Paint Co., where he retired in 1997. Herman and Rosa were married for 58 years, a marriage full of many, many wonderful memories. He will truly be missed, while he's "working on his next life," as he would say. Herman was preceded in death by his parents; siblings; and great-granddaughter, Gracie Rae Cofer. Survivors: Wife, Rosa Faye Cofer; children, Donald Cofer of Macon, Ga., Ronald Cofer of Godley, Linda Cofer Patterson of Decatur, James Cofer of Georgetown, Dale Cofer of Saginaw, and Mark Cofer of White Settlement; grandchildren, Kelli Jones Gary, Kevin Cofer, Kenny Cofer, Randy Cofer, Ryan Cofer, Kelsee Cofer Seidel-Garcia, Brandon Cofer, Heith Cofer and Hunter Cofer; and 14 great-grandchildren.
