Fort Worth, Texas - James Henry Atkinson, 95, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Memorial Service: 10 a.m. Friday, September 19, 2025, at University Christian Church, 2720 S University Drive, Fort Worth, Texas 76109.
Jimmy was born in Wagoner, Oklahoma, on May 27, 1930. He was the third child of Gus and Kate Atkinson.
Known to most of his friends as "Ack" and "Doc", Jimmy graduated from Poly High School in Fort Worth, Texas, and in 1947, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he spent four years on active and reserve duty. Following his time in the Marine Corps, Jimmy worked for the Railroad at the Fort Worth Depot until 1954 when he was drafted by the United States Army during the Korean War. During his active duty with the Army, Jimmy was assigned to a medical unit where he became a dental assistant. It was at that time he made the decision that he was going to go to college and become a dentist.
During his time in college at Texas Wesleyan University, he met the love of his life, Claudia Couser, who he was married to for 64 years. Together, they built a close family of two sons, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Following their return to Fort Worth from dental school at the University of Missouri, Jimmy set up his dental practice where he practiced for 50 years. While Jimmy did not initially attend TCU, he was all things TCU. He became the dentist for the athletic department, taking care of all the athletes and most of the administration for 40 years. After buying a ranch, Jimmy went back to school at TCU and got his Ranch Management degree.
Jimmy and Claudia attended University Christian Church where he developed his strong beliefs in God and family. He relished the times spent at the ranch driving his grandchildren through the ranch feeding cattle and teaching them about life on a ranch.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife, Claudia.
He is survived by his two sons, Scott Atkinson, and Mike Atkinson and his wife, Maryann; their six children, that includes son, Jimmy and his wife, Chase, their son, Jack and daughter, Preston Kate; son, Charlie and wife, Katie; son, William and his two sons, Archie and Waylon; son, Brian and his wife, Natalie, daughter, Claire, and sons, Bobby and Arthur; son, Patrick; and daughter, Carrie.
