Juan "Big John" Mendez, 68, passed away Friday, July 24, 2015. Funeral: 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment: 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olivet. Big John was born Jan. 24, 1947, in Laredo. Big John was a staple of the custom exhaust industry from 1966 until his death. He owned and operated Big John's Muffler in Haltom City for the last 21 years. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps serving bravely in the Vietnam War. He loved his family and was a great provider. He also loved his friends. The loves of his life were the mother of his children, his children and his grandchildren. Big John was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Luis Mendez. Survivors: Wife, Meri Mendez; sons, John Mendez and wife, Kristi, Paul Mendez and wife, Tricia, Mark Mendez and wife, Jenny; grandchildren, Margaret Lee Mendez, Jack Anthony Mendez, Sydney Nicole Williams, Lilyanna Saavedra; brother, Carlos Mendez; sisters, Gloria Galindo, Rose Stewart; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Mendez family. I am so sorry for your loss. I did not know he had passed, that makes me so sad. Daniel and Rosario told me about it today.I wish I had been there for you.Please accept my condolences and my love. I have lots of memories of John and your family when we were kids growing up in TP and especially of our moms. He is in Heaven with them now. Rest In Peace Johnny.

I met Big John through a business transaction. I sold him some solar screens for his shop. Big John was one of those persons you run across, if you show him respect, he will do the same for you. I did not realize i would be used along the path to see Big John come to the cross roads of his life and receive Jesus Christ in his heart. When John was admitted in the hospital after fracturing his hip, Paul called me and asked if i would go and talk with his dad and talk with him about the LORD JESUS CHRIST. I knew it was time. I met Paul there and was able to talk with Big John and let him know how concern his family and myself about where he would spend eternity. I talked with him and asked if i could pray with him and ask if he would like to ask Jesus to come into his life. I can honestly say Big John was ready, there was no questions or let me think about this, but only the shaking of the head yes and me and Paul gathered and held hands with John and prayed. John confessed the LORD into his heart. I said afterwards i now can sleep peaceful knowing you did this, and Big John said; me to with a smile. The very next day I was able to talk with Big John and ask him a few questions about heaven and if he was going to go. He said; he did not know, but hope so. We need to understand one thing is asking JESUS to come into your heart the second is understanding the mechanics of it. This was all new to John. I began to explain to John the process of when he accepted Jesus, the work JESUS did on the cross, dieing for his sins was all he needed to believe in and that there is no work man could do to please GOD only the work JESUS did on the cross dieing for our sins, this is the only work GOD accepts. We had a good conversation about the spiritual things of God, myself and Lil John. Later I asked Big John who is JESUS to you??? He thought for a minute and said; MY SAVIOR!!! For anyone who knew Big John, i don't think this is something they would have expected, but for me, That was all that needed to be said. Big John in his own words; "MY SAVIOR". I was able to pray for him one more time the day before he passed on into eternity, in all this i was very Blkessed. I want to add; Thank you Mary and John, Paul and Mark for allowing me to be part of this service. I am Honored. My Prayers are with you.

To all the Mendez family,

Please know that my prayers and thoughts are with you all as you face the tough days ahead. John was such a good neighbor to all of us and we will miss seeing him sitting on the porch or driving away in his white truck. He was friendly and waved when he would see you. I am so glad I got to see him before he passed away. For John, his struggle is over and he is resting in the arms of his Lord. There is no more pain.
