William Peters Obituary

William John "Bill" Peters died peacefully on Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, in Fort Collins, Colo., with family members by his side. Funeral: 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel, Fort Worth. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: The family requests memorial contributions be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kan. 66675. Born in Wadena, Minn., on Oct. 28, 1922, he led a life filled with adventure and smiles for all. Bill overcame polio as a child and never let its effects hamper his goals. Bill enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 while a student at the University of Minnesota and served as a first lieutenant in the 326th Bomb Squadron, 92nd Bomb Group, in the European theater. Piloting a B-17 Flying Fortress, he successfully completed 35 bombing missions over Germany and German-occupied territories in 1944-1945. Returning stateside on "R&R," he met his future wife, Shirley. Bill and Shirley were married on April 7, 1946, in Los Angeles, Calif. Soon after, they moved to Minnesota for Bill to complete his degree in aeronautical engineering and upon Bill's graduation moved to Texas. Bill worked for General Dynamics (Lockheed Martin) in Fort Worth for 39 years as an aeronautical engineer on planes such as the F-111 and F-16. Bill and Shirley raised three sons in Fort Worth and filled their lives to the brim with exciting adventures and sharing stories of his life's experiences while camping, skiing, and sailing. Bill always drove his car on all his vacations because in his words, "I've flown enough for a few lifetimes." Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Shirley. Survivors: His three sons and their wives, Pete and Marita of Nashville Tenn., Doug and Karen of Williams, Ariz., and Robert and Leigh Ann of Fort Collins, Colo.; three nephews; three nieces; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many friends across the country. He will be especially missed by his good friends, Bill Marcum and Mildred Hogan; and his longtime friends at Richland Hills Methodist Church.

Bill was the best boss i ever had. I worked for him for over 10 years. He gave me every opportunity and i learned a lot. One of the things he did well as as an engineering chief was look after the people that worked for him.

Bill Peters was our neighbor in Richland Hills many years ago, and he and Shirley were lifelong friends of my parents. My brothers and I loved to swim in the Peters' pool. Good people. For some reason, I was too dumb as a kid to learn about all his military accomplishments for our country. In reading the obituary, I realized another bond that Bill and my dad had: service in the Army Air Corp. Bill sent my dad a letter at Christmas a couple of years ago, so I know they remained friends till the end. We extend condolences to the Peters boys from the Kelley kids.

Mr. Peters was also my first boss at General Dynamics after college. I owe him a lot for helping me start a carreer as an engineer. I have great memorys of those years in the ECS group on the F-16 program. Mr. Peters was a great person to know and work for! My condolences to his family!

Bill was my first boss when I hired into General Dynamics straight out of college in 1978. He was an incredible boss and man. I recall one business trip with Bill where we sat in a bar in Los Angeles as he told me amazing stories of his flying days in WWII. I learned so much from Bill. He was a special man.

Bill Peters was my first boss at General Dynamics. I was his Steno for several years and he was such a great guy to work for. He loved his family and talked about all of you often. So sorry for your loss. Donna Haynie
