Yandall Woodfin Obituary

Dr. Yandall Clark Woodfin III, a Christian educator and minister, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014. Service: Honoring his memory and his God will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Agape Baptist Church with Dr. Jim Denison and Dr. Dean Dickens officiating. The family will greet visitors in Agape Baptist Faith Hall after the service. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any contributions to Agape Baptist Church youth ministry. Yandall willed his body to UT Southwestern Medical School. Born in Cisco, Yandall moved to Fort Worth as an infant and graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1945. He received his bachelor's degree from Baylor University, master of theology from Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey, master of divinity and doctor of philosophy from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a second doctor of philosophy from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, with additional graduate study at Cambridge University in England. After serving briefly as pastor, Yandall began his teaching career while directing Baptist Student Ministries at Tarleton State University in Stephenville. He taught at Baylor University; the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Rueschlikon, Zurich, Switzerland; and for 27 years at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth before retiring in 1994. He served as interim or guest preacher for churches throughout Texas and Oklahoma. While on sabbaticals from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he served as pastor of English language churches in Tripoli, Libya, and Munich, Germany; taught again at the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Switzerland; Carey College in Auckland, New Zealand; Whitley College, University of Melbourne in Australia; and was scholar in residence at the Nazarene Bible College in Buesingen, Germany. He authored two books and numerous scholarly articles for theological and philosophical journals. An exceptional artist, Yandall delighted in sharing his landscape oil paintings and prints with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Y.C. and Viola Woodfin of Fort Worth; and his son, Yandall Clark Woodfin IV. Survivors: His devoted wife of 65 years, Leta Frances Beene Woodfin; daughters, Dr. Carol Woodfin, Linda Wells and Rosemary Anderson and husband, Mark Jordan; sister, Diane Orr and husband, Donald; grandchildren, Nancy Etter-Fuentes, Steve and Sylvia Etter, and Michael Wells; and niece, Alicia Chavis, her husband, Vernon, and son, Jacob.

To the Family,

I graduated from SW in 1990, and I truly have so many fond memories and appreciation for the priceless education I received. I was fortunate enough, as many were, to study under the greatest (collectively at one time), internationally-renown scholars in the world.
Even after 29 years, after a reflective discussion with a client today on Art History, I couldn't help but think of Dr. Woodfin and how much of an impact he still has in my life and my work. Thank you for allowing me the honor to experience and to know such a man.

To Yandall's family,
I am sorry that this is such a late entry. I had the honor to know Mr Woodfin several years ago. He was such a gentle spirit, kind and compassionate. Condolences to his dear family. I know he will be sadly missed.

So sorry for your family's loss. Dr Woodfin was a guest in our home in Libya many years ago when he served as the interim pastor of FBC Tripoli. I was quite young but I still recollect his kind and gentle mannerisms and, most especially, his telling of "Sam Spade-- private eye, ear, nose, and throat." Our youth group loved him!

I had he privilege of knowing Linda in school and then having Dr Woodfin in my doctoral studies. A great mind, a gentle spirit, and the father of equally brilliant children. Though certainly greater to you, your loss is our loss in the Baptist family, here in Texas and in Europe.

May His peace guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus

Dear Leta and family, Love and prayers are sent your way. Nita Lumpkin let us know about Yandall's death. For your connection, we were students at Ruschlikon 1968-69 school year. May our Lord provide the wonderful complete comfort that only He can give.

My memories of Yandell go back to high school. Leta, thank your for your friendship. You and Yandell were most pleasant memories at Poly reunions. I share your loss for such a fine man. I have been unable to contact you by phone and would love to hear from you.

Dear Leta, Our hearts are broken for you and your family. We are so blessed to have had Yandall (and you) in our lives. That short time I had with you two at Tarleton made such an impact on my life. We thank God for this extraordinary man that touched so many young lives. Our love, Winona and Chuck Williams

Leta Frances, It has been many, many years since we have been in contact but I have thought of you and Yandall often, reflecting upon youth revival experiences with you and seminary classes and BSU work with Yandall. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Fleta, my wife, went to be with the Lord a year ago May 2nd. I empathize with you in your sorrow. May the peace that God gives uphold you now and in the days ahead.

Leta, Ted always thought so much of Yandall and you at Tarlton. We enjoyed the time we spent at the BSU reunions. Yandall was such an inspiration to everyone.
