George Parsons Obituary

PARSONS Dr. George A. Parsons, Jr., 84, passed away on June 30, 2005 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. A faithful and passionate man, George will be remembered for his intelligent wit, humble compassion, wise counsel, progressive theology and visionary thinking. George is preceded in death by his beloved only son Alec and is survived by his devoted bride of 54 years, Marjorie; his daughter, Heather; and his adored granddaughter, Arielle. Among his many accomplishments were undergraduate degrees in Economics and Biology from The Ohio State University, Bachelor and Masters degrees from Oberlin School of Theology, an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy from Mount Union College and a Doctorate of Ministry from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Parsons was a published author of two novels and numerous magazine articles. He was a proponent of youth mission trips, developing and participating in work projects around the world, including a trip to Nicaragua to immunize youth during a severe outbreak of polio in 1969. As a pastor, community leader and prominent citizen of Pepper Pike, Dr. Parsons was a founder of the Federation of Orange Communities, the Orange Recreation and Education Department, the Orange Area Service Committee and the Orange Area Religious Association. He was an active participant in programs at Orange schools, St. Luke's Hospital Association Board, Children's Services of Cuyahoga County and the Cleveland Federation of Churches. George's daily radio broadcast "Slice of Life" and his prolific, stimulating sermons touched the lives of many in the Greater Cleveland area during his 25-year post as Senior Pastor of Garfield Memorial Methodist Church. However, George's true success and ultimate joy came from the abundant love of family and friends who surrounded him throughout his life and long into the hours of his dying day. He loved most the spark of lively conversation, the words of a good story and inspiring others. May his soul find rest at the end of an arduous journey and may he be remembered as a gentle man. A Memorial Service will be held at Garfield Memorial Methodist Church, 3650 Lander Road, Pepper Pike, Ohio on Monday, July 11, 2005 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been completed by RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 515 High St., Worthington, Ohio, (614)885-4006.

I will miss my brother, George. He was my playmate as a child growing up. We had many plans that will have to wait. His nieces: Becky, and Julie and husband Mike, loved and miss him. Thank you, George, for the wonderful times we shared on earth. You kept the faith and finished the course. See you again in His time.

My brother, George, always had this sign on his desk: "Begin, the Rest Is Easy". He always urged me on, and inspired me.

I first met Rev. Parsons when I married my wife Kathy McGarry who was a member of Garfield Church and we have been members ever since that day in 1968 when George married us. He baptised our two sons and gave the funeral sermon for Kathy's father - our relationship is long, our memories are fond and he will be missed by us and all those with whom he came into contact over his long career.

My name is Krista Kutina and I knew Dr. Parsons through my family. I have fond memories of how lovingly he took care of his cottage at Lakeside. Most of all, it was his baptism of my 2 nephews that was so special and he made it that way. I am so sorry to Heather and Mrs. Parsons for their loss. He was a genuine person and will be missed.
