John Goff Obituary

GOFF John Paul Goff, M.D., age 74, died on September 25, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert H. and Martha Francis (Flickinger) Goff. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Jan (Ellis) Goff; and children, Allison Paige (Jerry) Engelman of Plymouth, Michigan; Ashley Kathleen (Robert Glennon) Goff of Arlington, Virginia and John Charles Ellis (Jennifer Fountain) Goff of Columbus. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Michael, Megan, Molly, Samuel, Madeline, Ryan, the closest to home, Stella Grace and last but not least, Crosby. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jeanne Ellis (Jack) Persinger. A graduate of The Ohio State University in 1960 and an MD degree in 1964, he followed this with a medical internship and residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital (RMH) ending in 1969. He was a gynecologist and obstetrician and practiced with Frank C. Wright, M.D. and Carl Krantz, Jr., M.D. in Worthington, Ohio for approximately 27 years. At RMH, he was Department Chairman, Ob-Gyn 1984-1987, President of the Medical Staff, 1990-1991, a member of the RMH Board of Trustees, 1994-1999, where he also served on the Executive Committee, Finance and Asset Committee and the Joint Conference Committee of the Board. Dr. Goff was an Honorary Member of the RMH Medical Staff until his death. While serving in his role as Medical Director, Dr. Goff, along with other senior leaders at RMH and Grant Medical Center (GMC), was instrumental in the founding of the Credentialing Verification Organization (OhioHealth Group Credentialing Services) in 1999, which streamlined the credentialing functions, eliminated redundancy and increased physician satisfaction for physicians who were on the medial staffs of RMH and GMC. Dr. Goff was instrumental in the development of The Medical Group of Ohio (MGO) and was one of the 20 original members. He then was employed by OhioHealth Group and the Medical Group of Ohio as Chief Medical Officer from 1995-2001. After a brief retirement, which he found he wasn't ready for, he then worked as the Chief Medical Officer of OhioHealth Ambulatory Division. John was a buyer and seller of metal toy soldiers and a collector of Ohio State University and NFL football cards. He was a numismatist and loved to read non-fiction books. He particularly enjoyed taking Tai Chi lessons from Dr. Sun after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. He was a past member of Scioto Country Club, Franklin County Medical Association and the Ohio State Medical Association. He also was a member of the Board of Directors of RMH and OhioHealth, and he served as a trustee for Friendship Village of Dublin. John coached numerous sport teams of all three of his children and was an enthusiastic spectator at all events he could attend. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, who particularly enjoyed family vacations at the beach and thinking about his grandchildren. I am saddened to hear of the passing of John Goff. He comforted me when my first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, with a reassuring touch on my arm and his soft words telling me "some things are just meant to be". He delivered my 9 lb. 8 oz. son in 1984, declaring immediately upon delivery that my son "had on a football jersey!". He also delivered my daughter in 1986. I remember calling him and saying I was in labor, and he told me he was watching the World Series but would meet me at the hospital when I felt it was time. Each year during the World Series I think of him. Some doctors might have been irritated to get a call at home - but not Dr. Goff. These stories are just to let you know how many of us are out there with memories of Dr. Goff - a true gentle-man who will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.

I was shocked and saddened to just learn of Dr. Goff's passing. He delivered my late-in-life child who is approaching 40 and we had many great conversations in the years of follow-up appointments until he retired from his practice. I missed him a lot.

Please know that you have my deepest sympathy.

Mrs. Goff,John (Scooter)and Jen
Sorry to hear about your Dad's passing.
You are never ready for this event but you have to cherish the good memories you have and go forward. I think I met your Dad once at your house and I could tell he was a good man and you have his likeness and you should cherish that quality he passed on to you. Steve and I lost our Dad at a much earlier age, so hold the memories close to your heart.
You and your family will be in our prayers and thoughts in these days to come.
Uncle Dick and Sandy

I had the privilge of knowing Dr. Goff for several years when we worked together at OhioHealth Group. He was funny, kind and always encouraging. His favorite lunch was when he could find grilled cheese and tomato soup.He loved thinking up things to make us feel good, hat day, cupcake day, chili day, flower day--.I recall he was the first one to lead us in a rememberance service after 9/11 happened. It touched me so.He always talked about his family, you couild tell he loved all of you very much.We are all better off for knowing him.God bless you.

Dear Goff family,
I am so saddened to hear of Dr. Goff's death. He delivered both my sons in 1984 and 1989. The 1984 premature delivery was very touch and go for I had contracted pre-eclampsic toxemia suddenly and Dr. Goff successfully delivered "Peanut" (the nickname he penned) and I was safe from harm. I always thought an unexperienced doctor might not have had as good an outcome. I will be eternally grateful for Dr. Goff for being the ultimate doctor; thinking of the health and welfare of his patients. God bless him and my heartfelt prayers go out to the family.
