Marion Hollingsworth Jr.

Hollingsworth Marion Hollingsworth, Jr., 91, of Granville, passed away on June 30, 2013, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center. Marion was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 11, 1922 and attended Columbus Public Schools until receiving a scholarship to Westtown School near Philadelphia. His B.S. degree in Physics Engineering and M.S. degree in Physics were earned at The Ohio State University in1947-48 and he was awarded the Tau Beta Pi honor in 1943. Marion was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Marion and Grace (Huff) Hollingsworth, both educators, and his sister Margaret Hollingsworth. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia (O'Brien) Hollingsworth; daughter and son-in-law, Lin and Tim Riffle; and one granddaughter, Kelsey. In the 1940s, Marion's faith led him to serve in the Civilian Public Service Corps under the direction of the U.S. Department of the Interior where he was stationed in Oregon and was trained in fire control and prevention. Marion retired as a Research Associate with Owens-Corning Fiberglas Technical Center in 1984 following 35 years of service, including physics research, product testing, and energy research laboratories. A recognized expert in the thermal properties and performance of insulation products, Marion represented Owens-Corning on the American Society for Testing and Materials Committee C-16 and also the International Standards Organization, ISO. He traveled to several foreign countries as part of his responsibilities. A real do-it-yourself person, Marion enjoyed working with his hands. He learned the building trades by helping his father build the family home from the ground up. He was a perfectionist, as was his father. He enjoyed taking photographs and developing negatives, family trips, sailing on Buckeye Lake, tinkering, animals and nature, tracing the family tree, and loved to shop for bargains. Marion was a member of the Licking County Genealogical Society, where in the mid-1990s he designed and implemented the first Licking County Records Archive room, bringing old volumes from the courthouse attic and other sites where they were preserved and accessible for research. For many years, he was the sound engineer for the Licking County Aging Program's Zerger Hall Band making do with what was available to build a sound system for concerts. The family extends much appreciation to the staff at SharonBrooke and Hospice of Central Ohio for their compassionate care. A memorial service honoring Marion's life will be held at a later date.
