Ralph Standley Obituary

Standley III, Ralph W.
1938 - 2018
Ralph W. Standley III, age 80, longtime Marion resident, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 2, 2018, at Riverside Methodist Hospital following complications of a stroke. On July17, 1938, Ralph was born in Columbus, the oldest of four children of Thelma (Fisher) and the late Ralph W. Standley Jr. He was raised on a farm in Marengo, Ohio, where he graduated as the valedictorian of Marengo High School in the class of 1956. Ralph attended The Ohio State University. He also served his country as a member of the Army National Guard for 6 years. Ralph met the love of his life, Marcia Poorman, after a basketball game at the Marion Coliseum. They were married on November 4, 1961. Together they shared forty-three wonderful years of marriage, lovingly raising three children: Kyle, Trent and Brooke. Marcia preceded him in death on December 5, 2004. Ralph was an entrepreneur at heart. He owned a bookkeeping business and worked in residential real estate in the Marion area before making the leap to commercial real estate development. In 1988, he opened the first of eight Giant Video Stores. Together with his children, Ralph grew the video store business and purchased a large existing business called West Coast Video. Ralph served as Chairman of West Coast Entertainment Corporation and was proud to be an integral part of the initial public offering when it went public and was traded on the NASDAQ. In 1997, he was recognized as Retailer of the Year by the Video Software Dealers Association. A man of deep and abiding faith, Ralph was an active member of Prospect St. United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where he served on the Finance Committee and the Visitation Team. He was also was very proud to be a volunteer at Marion General Hospital. Through the years, Ralph and Marcia were supporters of Pleasant High School and Columbus School for Girls athletics and activities. For the past three years, Ralph lived at Abbington of Powell. He tremendously enjoyed the friendships he formed with staff and residents alike. His family is grateful that he was surrounded by such caring people at this juncture in his life. Ralph will be dearly missed by his mom, Thelma, his three children: Brooke (Andy) Stein, and Kyle and Trent Standley; his grandchildren, who were his greatest source of pride: Maggie (Kyle) Carmichael, Victoria Standley, Adelaide and Normandie Standley, and Owen, Liam and Lily Stein; two siblings: Larry (Barb), and Carol (Gary) House; a sister-in-law, Ann Standley; former daughters-in-law, Shelley Standley and Kelly Standley and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and father, Ralph was preceded in death by his brother, Doug Standley. His family will greet friends from 11:30 am to 1 pm on Saturday, December 8th, at Prospect St. United Methodist Church, 185 S. Prospect St., Marion. Services honoring his life will follow there at 1 pm, with Pastor Therese Lehman and Pastor Joe Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the PIN Fund (People In Need) at Prospect Street United Methodist Church or to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (https://donate.lls.org/). Kyle, Trent, Brooke and family,
Your father was a kind, gentle man. The picture that you have picked for him is how I remember him from church. Your mother and father are part of my memories of growing up in the church. They were a pretty special couple.
You all are in my prayers. Take care of yourselves.

Please accept my deepest sympathies.
Your Dad was a school friend of my husband (Bill Hurtt) and was gracious enough to speak at his Celebration of Life in 2014. He impressed everyone with all the statistics of their years playing sports together and won my family's heart when he closed by simply saying "he was my friend" We will never forget his kindness during that time.
I liked your Dad so very much and it was a pleasure to know him and your Mom!
I am lifting your family in prayer asking for peace of mind and comfort to your heart! God's blessings on you all.

Trent, Kyle and family. I am so sorry. Your father was a wonderful person. I have a lot of great memories of your father and mother when I worked for them. I am praying for the Lord to comfort all of you.

Mr. Ralph was an intricate part of the fabric of Abbington of Powell. We enjoyed talking about OSU's football games, often seeing him leave for fun days at the baseball park with his sons. He dearly loved his children, grandchildren and extended family members. We became acquainted with their names and accomplishments through him. The residents and our church ministry at Abbington will truly miss him. The fact that we will meet him again is a solace for us.
To the family, you have taken such wonderful, loving care of Mr. Ralph and we hold you in our fervent prayers. Prayers of comfort, peace, strength and Grace for the coming days ahead.
Our Love,
