Richard Bowman Obituary

BOWMAN Richard Stanton Bowman, 80, of Columbus, OH, passed away on February 3, 2007 following a brief illness. Diagnosed with fibrous lung disease in 1999, he worked diligently with specialists and exercised regularly at McConnell Heart Health Center and was consequently blessed with eight more years to enjoy family, friends and his two beloved grandchildren. He was born January 19, 1927 in the Canton, OH area, the son of Stanton and Ruby Bowman. A WWII veteran, he was a graduate of Political Science from The Ohio State University. A devout democrat and member of the American Civil Liberties Union, politics remained a life-long passion as did his love of art, jazz and classical music, nature with the Central Ohio Native Plant Society, history and travel. He was known and loved for his clever wit. Co-owner of Turntable Record Shops in the 1950's and 1960's, with friend Bob Forgey, he retired from Sears, Roebuck & Co. in 1989. He was preceded in death by both parents, brother James, sister Jeanne (Pavell), and nephews Steve and Scott Stansbury. Survived by wife of 50 years, Jane; son, Christopher (Susan Ramser); daughter, Jennifer (Greg Carter); grandchildren, Avery Marie and Austin Carter; sister, Lynn B. Stansbury; sister-in-law, Sue Mitchell; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A celebration of Richard's life will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to McConnell Heart Health Center, 3773 Olentangy River Rd., Columbus, OH 43214.

We are truly saddened by Dick's passing this month, and we are grateful that we saw him just this last Christmas 2006. Dick and Jane are some our oldest friends and we keep very happy memories of his humor, idiosyncracies and enjoyment of life, especially in music, sailing, and family get-togethers in Columbus. We would like to take part in his celebration of life.
