JOSEPH JOHN GOMES Caring father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend Joe J. Gomez departed this life Wednesday, July 31, 2002. He was 75. A longtime resident of San Leandro, CA, Mr. Gomes was born on April 20, 1927 at home in Oakland, CA and was baptized at St. Benedict Catholic Church. The son of Portuguese immigrants from the Madeira Islands, he attended Castlemont High School before enlisting as a Seaman in the United States Maritime Service. In 1950, Mr. Gomes was inducted into the United States Army and served as a Private First Class until 1952. He attended Laney Trade School in Oakland from 1955-1956 learning television and radio repair. Mr. Gomes was the beloved widower of his lifetime partner, the late Olive T. Coe, who he met in 1958. From 1959 until 1995, he was employed as an Instrument Mechanic at the Alameda Naval Air Station. After the closing of the "Air Station" in 1995, Mr. Gomes took a position with Astro Aire Corporation. An avid outdoorsman, Joe loved spending time with his family trout fishing at various lakes and rivers throughout the state his favorite being Pinecrest Lake. Listening to "Big Band Swing" music, visiting with his two grandchildren, riding his bike and attending A's games were also favorite pastimes. He will be deeply missed, and forever lovingly remembered by his surviving family members, Sisters: Phyllis Gomes of Oakland, Rose Rose of San Leandro. Children: Michelle Faulkner and husband James of Pasadena, Leonard Coe and wife Lisa of Sunnyvale, Darrel "Lester" Coe of Alameda. Nephews: John Gomes of Florissant, MO., Chris Gomes of Amarillo, TX and their wives. Nieces: Marjorie, Loretta and Amy. Grandchildren: Fiona Faulkner of Pasadena and David Coe of Sunnyvale. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Sepulchre in Hayward, CA.
