Joseph John "Jack" Sheehan
June 20, 1939 - December 5, 2021
Resident of Fresno, CA
Jack was born in Oakland, Ca to Joseph and Frances Sheehan. He was raised in San Leandro. Jack was a star athlete for the San Leandro High School Pirates swim team and broke many records in the Butterfly and Freestyle events. After graduating high school, he attended and received his bachelor's degree from San Jose State University. After college, he joined the US Army serving a tour in Germany. After returning to the US, he entered the National Teacher Corps and taught reading at Corpus Christi Junior High in Texas. He moved back to California in 1968 and was employed by Oakland Public Schools where he began as a social science teacher at Frick Junior High School. His many accomplishments included; a grant from the Fulbright-Hays Program, being selected as a California Mentor Teacher, honored as Oakland's Marcus A Foster Distinguished Educator, as well as being awarded Teacher of the Year by the Board of Education Of the Oakland Unified School District. He retired from teaching in 1997 after ten years at Bret Hart Junior High School and then moved to Fresno to be near family. Jack was a great person, a mentor and positive influence to so many people. He will be forever missed and the wonderful moments and lessons he shared will be forever remembered.
