After a long and productive life, Leo J. Alvelais Corona, resident of Union City, passed away peacefully in his Union City home in the early morning of March 20, 2015. He was ninety-seven. An avid golfer for most of his life, Leo was born in Chihuahua, Mexico and moved to the Bay Area in 1943 with his wife, Emilia, also from Chihuahua, and their three children. Two more children were added to the family in the Bay Area. After residing in Oakland for 14 years, the family moved to Union City in 1958 where Leo soon became very active as a community leader. Leo was elected to the Union City Council in 1966 and became Union City Mayor in 1968. Leo received many accolades for his contributions to his community, including a laudatory resolution in the U.S. Congress and having a Union City street named in his honor. A dedicated family man, Leo was married to Emilia Carreón for 61 years until Emilia passed away in the year 2000. Leo is survived by five children: Leo, Luis, Emilia, Michael, and Roberto. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday, April 6, 2015, 5-9 PM at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd., Hayward, California 94544 in the Reflection Chapel. A memorial service will be held in the Reflection Chapel on Tuesday, April 7 from 1-2 PM followed by interment beside his beloved wife, Emilia.
