Melvin K. P. Ho, pediatrician and longtime Oakland resident, passed away this year after a brief battle with leukemia. He was 77 years old.
Born in Honolulu, Melvin graduated from 'Iolani High School, Lawrence University in Wisconsin and the University of Cincinnati Medical School. He served as a Navy Lieutenant Commander in Pensacola, Florida before becoming a chief resident at Oakland Children's Hospital, and earning a Masters in Public Health at UC Berkeley.
Melvin worked as a pediatrician/dermatologist with Kaiser in Martinez and Walnut Creek for 28 years, and as a clinical professor at UCSF. After retirement he volunteered in Oakland, giving CORE classes and working as a physician at City Team and the Malta Free Health Care Clinic.
A member of First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley for over 40 years, and later St. Mark's Episcopalian Church, Melvin provided international mission service in China, Nepal, and India. After retirement Melvin became an Oblate with the Order of St. Benedict (Big Sur and Berkeley) and completed pilgrimages in Spain, France, and Italy.
Melvin loved sailing on the Bay with friends and family, especially his grandchildren. He loved returning to Hawai'i to visit friends and family, swim with sea turtles, and eat at favorite spots. His lifelong passion for music included classical, opera, and contemplative.
He is survived by Bonnie, his wife of 50 years, his daughter Jennifer, his son Jonathan, son-in-law Daniel and grandchildren Nathan, Lani, Damien, and Benjamin. He is also survived by his older brother Ernest.
