I lost my Mom to cancer January 17th, 2010. We knew for almost 2 1/2 years she was going to die so we had a lot of time to prepare. She died at the age of 72. I felt like that was way too soon. Her 78 year old sister was at the funeral and she looked great. I thought I was prepared but in reality I find the void she left almost unbarable.
Which beings me to why I am writing in Scotts guest book. I can't help but think of Linda & Bob Desmond during my time of grief. If my process is difficult even though it was for the most part the natural progression of life, how hard must it have been and still be to lose Scott the way you both did? I know 2.7 years to you both must feel like nothing. I know I'm actually Chris's friend and only knew Scott through him, but I've always loved your family. I always thought Linda Desmond was just about the coolest mom / lady I ever met. I think about your family often. I am so sorry for what happened. I'm sad for Scott as well. I'm am sad for all of you of course. Life and death can be so confusing. I hope someday everything that happened will make some sort of sense. My email is [email protected] if any of you ever need anything.

I am completely shocked and saddened to belatedly learn of this tragedy. Scott and Chris were friends of mine from high school, and in looking to reconnect I learned of Scott's passing. I am deeply sorry for the loss to the Desmond family--Bob's and Scott's. My prayers go out to the whole family. Scott will always be remembered.

Dear Desmond Family,
I hope time has healed some morsel of your pain. I can't imagine it has. This is such a horrible anaversary to have to endure each year. I think about all of you, all of the time. I house sat for Chris this past week. I saw a picture of Rob, Chris, Scott, and Tiffany. The frame reads, "Fate made us family. Love made us friends". You on this day have so much love in the wonderful family you have that I envy you all in so many ways. Scott will be forever missed and loved. I love you all as well. I know Scott wants you to find a way to smile today. I'm not a praying type person. I cannot pray and ask for things in my own life. I don't think it works that way. My higher power makes me answer my own prayers through my actions and choices. I do pray for all of you, & Caroline & Tyler. Those prayers feel right. If there is anything I can do for any of you please ask. I was able to make the members of Scott's favorite band RUSH aware of Scott's sacrifice. So any request for me is welcome. I love you all.

Dear Desmond Family,
I was a friend and co-worker of Scott during part of his stint at SunAmerica. It has been years since i last saw him. I saw his picture on TV today and my heart sank when i realized the reason. Scott brought me to tears from laughter more times then i can remember and i thoroughly enjoyed knowing him. I remember how much he wanted to be a fire fighter and how hard he worked to make it happen. I cant believe the news and have you all in my thoughts and prayers

Although We've never met Matt or Scott, My wife and I were honored to represent my local, Local 255 in Calgary, Alberta, at the ceremony in Concord last year. We were impressed by the show of solidarity from firefighters, both American and some Canadian brothers as well. Our thoughts are with the families, friends and brother firefighters at this time of year. Stay strong and be safe.

So here it is. The horrible month of July. I'm not sure if this the right place to express true feelings, but I can't help it. I know in situations like these it's important to find meaning. I've thought about your family every day for 349 days straight. There hasn't been a day where I haven't wept, or fought back tears thinking about what your family is having to endure. I was at Chris house last weekend. I was looking through old photos. I noticed that at every family event Scott was always seated next to Linda. It's so obvious how close Linda and Scott were. In every picture Bob is beaming. He loved having having his entire family together. How alone in pain you both must be. What happened to you just seems so unfair. Rob is such a protective older brother. I wish I could hug your pain away. Chris is my best friend. I believe Chris has something we can all learn from. There is such a strength in him. Chris is the product of great parenting. He's the nicest, loving person I know. I hate that his brother was taken from him. I didn't have my own relationship with Scott. It was a side relationship by proxy. We got along great. He was always smiling. We exchanged jokes. The last time I saw him we talked about his job. I asked him how could be a firefighter. It wasn't something Scott chose. It chose him. He was a great person. Look at his picture. He was beautiful to boot. The entry before mine is from Tiffany. It is so heartfelt. It makes me angry that she lost her hero. I'm sorry if I sound at all negative. I'm sure someday this will all make sense. I really hope so. I hope his wife and son somehow have the kind of life Scott would have dreamed for them. Please know that even though you may not hear from those who love you, you are thought of everyday. I know I'm not the only one. I wish you peace and happiness. That's what Scott wants for you all. Enjoy Disney World. You'll all be together eventually in the big Disney World in the sky.

Scott,
I miss you. I am really proud of you brother and there is not a day, nor an hour that goes by that I don't think of you. I wish you were here, I wish I could call you up, trade playful jokes and tell you how much I love you. We knew, but never said it enough. You always took care of me, for that I am eternally grateful. I will try to take care of the family like you always did, you were the glue brother. Life without you is the most difficult thing in the world. I can only live my life from here on out to make you proud. I never told you how much I looked up to you. I hope you know. Miss you with all my heart.

Dear Desmond Family & Friends,
Further to my previous guest book entry, this morning I submitted a membership application to the California Emergency Mobile Patrol (CEMP), which is a volunteer arm of the Los Angeles Police Dept. CEMP supports LAPD and other public agencies logistically and also also provides Urban Search and Rescue Services in Los Angeles City and County.
I've looked into this a number of times but but it off because I was intimidated by the time comittment/training requirements, physical distance etc.
Today, inspired and motivated by Scott's determination and sacrifice, I went ahead an applied. I don't know if I will be accepted, or even make it through their training, but to at least start the process is the best way I could find to honor Scott's memory. He'd probably be amused, but I think it would make him happy.

To all Scott's family and friends:
I am so deeply sorry to learn of this. I worked with Scott at SunAmerica, and I always admired how driven he was to persue a career in the fire service. He was a happy, wonderful and incredible guy.
I am deeply shocked. I haven't spoken to Scott since 1996, but I often think of him...when I see a Camaro, when I hear of OCFD on the news.
This evening, with all the coverage of the fires in So.Cal, I thought of Scott again and just did a random Google search, and all the information about his passing came up on my screen.
I am so terribly, terribly sorry...but it lifts my spirits to learn that he did have the career in the fire service that he wanted so much.
Sincerely,
Joseph Kelly

Dear Desmond Family,
You do not know me, but I knew Scott. We were coworkers at SunAmerica in L.A. We both had dreams of a career in the fire service, which was how we originally connected. Scott was a true inspiration to me when he would spoke of his dreams and helped fire me up when I felt like giving up on my dreams. Everytime I have heard of Contra Costa County in the news or through Firehouse.com I looked for Scott and expected to see him pulling a family out of a burning structure. Tonight I sat down to read the IAFF magazine and was shocked and heartbroken to hear about Scott paying the ultimate sacrifice.
Scott was a man of strong character and a true hero. Unfortunately, It has been years since I have spoken to him, but he has always been in my thoughts. Scott and his family will be in my prayers.
Respectfully, Lt. Eric Armitage

This is for Tyler: Someday you will understand that your Daddy was a Hero. I know your little heart is broken, because your Daddy doesn't come home, and you miss him more than you can express. As you grow-up your Mommy will tell you all about him. One day you will be proud to say "My Daddy was a Firefighter". You are the only one who can comfort Mommy now, and make her feel close to your Daddy. Now, you are her "little hero". Be Brave sweet little boy. Everyday will hurt a little less. And one day - you will hold your head high knowing that you are the son of Fire Engineer Scott Desmond. A man who gave his life trying to rescue people who needed him the most.
Bless you little guy - Live a Happy, Happy Life.
Linda Desmond

Dearest Carolyn - Yours and Scott's love for each other was his greatest joy. Having Tyler made his life so complete in every way because you were his mommy. It is what he always wanted and found true happiness with you. He waited a long time to find you and would do anything in the world to make you happy. You and Tyler were his world. He was so much in love with you. He felt truly blessed. He was a happy man!
Tyler, always remember the stories that are told to you about your daddy's love for you and how he enjoyed being your daddy. He simply adored you and did everything he could to be a wonderful daddy and make you happy. There wasn't a thing that he wouldn't do for you. He was amazed at all the things you already learned and how smart you were. He loved you with all his heart.

Dear Linda, Bob and the entire Desmond family, I am still in shock from reading the terrible e-mail that afternoon. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Scott was abundently blessed with the most wonderful parents who are truly proud of all their children. Such love in life should not endure such sorrow. It's seems so unnatural to lose a son -- I can't imagine the pain you must feel. May God wrap His loving arms around you as you walk through this time of grief, day by day, hour by hour and moment by moment. May your precious Scott rest in peace and may the love you have for each other help you in your time of sorrow. Scott's service as a hero will live on for all firefighters who fought before him and who will fight after him. I pray that you can take comfort knowing you will be together again some day.
God bless you all!

Carolyn and Tyler:
It is always difficult to find the words to say when such a thing as this has happened. I am certain you know it but it never hurts to hear again how proud Scott was of the both of you. You were truely the joys of his life. I once heard a saying that seems a fitting tribute to Scott and the way he left us.
"Courage is not the absence of fear but the judgment that something else is more important than fear. The brave do not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all."
He will be missed around the firehouse but his memory will be forever with us.

Bob, Linda, and all members of the Desmond family,
Our very deepest sympathies are with you at this time. We cannot begin to comprehend the loss of a child; instead we will pray that you will be able to find some micron of comfort with the thought that Scott's tragic death came while in service to others.

I will never cease to admire the love and caring that flows through this family. Scott's wonderful, loving and heroic attitude towards life is a product of this love - that he has passed on to his wife and son. May God bless us all as we mourn his death and share sympathy with all who loved him.
