Stanley J. Miller, 91, of Pleasanton died in his home surrounded by his loving family, on January 28, 2019 due to complications from cancer.
Stan was born in Lewiston, Maine, on June 29, 1927. The eldest son of Israel (Abie) and Fannie Miller, Stan entered college at 16 and took a hiatus to enlist in the Navy during World War II. After returning to the University of Maine he graduated with two engineering degrees. Stan met his wife, Hilda L. Miller, at the University's Hillel program. Hilda and Stan were married in June of 1951. Stan went on to earn his Master's Degree at the University of Michigan and completed a mid-career executive program at MIT.
Stan launched his career as an electrical engineer with his first job working for Sylvania in Boston. Over his extensive career, he held numerous positions with MIT Lincoln Laboratory and McDonnell Douglas. Two highlights of his career were assignments he spent working in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific and White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico for Lincoln Lab's radar installations. His career also included a two year stint at the Pentagon as a civilian. After many years as East Coast residents, the Millers moved to Tustin, CA where they stayed until 2013. In Tustin, Stan worked for McDonnell Douglas and eventually retired in Southern California. He and Hilda were active members of the University Synagogue in Irvine, CA. His retirement interests included teaching a driving class called 55 Alive, traveling, working for local Democratic party elections, the League of Women Voters and spending time with family.
Stan is survived by his wife of 67 years, Hilda L.Miller; his three sons, Scott Miller of Falls Church, Virginia; David Miller of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; William Miller, of Oakland California; his daughters-in-law, Diane Miller and Crystal Land; his grandchildren, Alexis Miller, Grace Heaslip, Luke Campagnola, Ben Campagnola, Zachary Land-Miller and Haley Land-Miller. He is also survived by his sister Judy Berman of Alpharetta, Georgia; brother, Joseph Miller and sister-in-law Barbara Miller of Rockville Maryland; sister-in-law Ina Miller of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Heritage Pointe Senior Living in the Jewish Tradition, 27356 Bellogente, Mission Viejo, California 92691. Stan, ever the Eagle Scout, will be remembered for his kind heart, sharp mind and deep love of family.
