Bill and I have been friends since 1945. He joined one of my early jazz combos and dearly loved to play. He would have done it for no pay at all. We traveled together for several summers, playing on a couple of mountain resorts in California, and from about 1948 until I left California in the early 1960s, Bill and I played on and off with various small jazz groups in the Bay Area. He was a dear friend and I will miss him terribly. My heart goes out to his family, and to Barbara, his twin sister.

There were so many good times, and that's what I will remember, as well as see his face every time I hear his favorite tune, "How High the Moon."

I will always remember Bill Alves, But under the name Grandpa. He wasn't my grandfather by blood, but he was in spirit. He always tried to show his love for his wife, Gail, and all of his family. I too remember the summers I would meet him in los banos, and I would stay one week a year at his home. HE was always wanting to do something fun for us children. I have never since seen a grandfather so happy and so willing to go to the movies, or the ice skating rink, even if he was just watching from the sides. He was a man who loved life, and I will never forget the lessons I have learned from knowing him. He really was the nicest grandpa I ever had...... I will miss you grandpa.....

I'm not sure where to start!! This all came so suddenly, even though we all knew it would be just a matter of time after Grandma passed away November 2, 2003. I will miss you Grandpa Bill tremendesly, as will Gage and Tj,(2 of his great grandchildren.) I will always remember our summer trips to Fremont. We would always go straight to Costco and get the big tubs of candy. Then off to the supermarket where we got to pick out our favorite cerel and snack foods. We would always go to the movies and Santa Cruz Boardwalk. He really knew how to show us grandkids a great time. He loved to play his piano for us, and did love his jazz music. I will always remember the park down the street from his house and all our trips to McDonald's. I remember laying in my grandparents bed watching the Disney channel waiting for grandpa to get off work and he would always bring me nachos frrom Taco Bell. He was good at spoiling us!!! He was always worried about gaining a few extra pounds and always so proud when he had lost them. I was always telling him how handsome he was. Although he is gone, I know he has been reunited with Granpma and they can spend the rest of eternity together. Until we meet again, please be watching over me and the boys!! We will miss you greatly!!!!

As a Father, grandfather, and great grandfather, we felt very blessed to have had Bill in our lives. He was giving, he was caring and he was the Father Rick never had. He made us feel like we were an important part of his life and I hope we were. My children were lucky to have had Bill for a grandfather, he was extremely special to them, as my children spent many a summer visiting them. Those times will forever be cherished. They were not bound by blood but by love, the most powerful bond of all. I'm sure Bill is now at peace with his beloved Gail, united for eternity. We will miss you Dad,

Love,

Rick and Sheri
