ELKIN — Mrs. Hazel Cox Byrd, 94, passed away Monday, July 25, 2016, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Byrd was born Nov. 7, 1921, in Wilkes County to Everett and Verna Smith Cox. Mrs. Byrd was a very active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church until she retired. She also served with her husband at Knobbs Baptist Church and Union Hill Baptist Church, teaching Sunday school and other ministry. Mrs. Byrd retired from Pilot Life Insurance Company in Elkin and also worked as a secretary for Charles Neaves Sr. Law office, The Elkin Tribune and the Salem Company. She also worked for the Civil Service Commission during World War II and was a notary public. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. William Von Byrd; and sister, Pauline Cox McGrady. Survivors include her son, Judge David V. Byrd of North Wilkesboro; daughter, Donna Byrd Parsons and husband William "Bill" of Brooklyn, New York; grandchildren, Deni Davis Sheehan and husband Edwin, Caroline Parsons, Laura Byrd Luffman and husband Zach, William David Byrd and Sarah Victoria Byrd; great-grandchildren, Deliah Sheehan and Justice Sheehan. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 28, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Danny Dodds officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 593 Pleasant Hill Drive, Elkin, NC 28621. Online condolences may be made to www.elkinfuneralservice.com.
