Carroll Carter Obituary

Carroll Carter
(1938-2018)
On Friday, July 20, 2018, Carroll Carter passed away quietly after a short illness at the age of 80. Born in Gilmer, TX to Eugene and Grace (Haney) Carter, Carroll spent his early years in east Texas, before moving with the family to Las Cruces, NM. Carroll enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Oakland, CA when he met his future wife on a Salvation Army-sponsored day of tobogganing and sledding in the snow.

Upon his honorable discharge, Carroll married Briane Armfield and returned to New Mexico, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree at New Mexico State University and was named Outstanding Student for the College of Education, quickly followed by his Master's Degree, beginning a life-long career in education. After moving his young family to West Virginia, Carroll served as Director of Co-Operative Education at West Virginia Institute of Technology in Montgomery, WV. In the early 1980s, Carroll and his family relocated to El Paso, TX where he worked at El Paso Community College and YISD before retiring.

Throughout his life, Carroll was an active member of Rotary International and had an extensive collection of club banners from each Rotary meeting he attended around the world. His strong sense of community service included his leadership roles within Rotary, volunteering at his kid's school, becoming president of the PTA, and for several years, received recognition for most blood donated annually.

For over a decade, Carroll organized several nation-wide trips for foreign exchange high school students placed in the southwest. Carroll's love of travel continued with his wife as they visited many countries outside the USA. When state-side, Carroll enjoyed his regular visits each year to Branson, MO, for the music and shows, RV'ing to Quartzsite, AZ, and going to the nearby mountains of Cloudcroft, NM whenever he decided El Paso was too hot.

Carroll is survived by his loving wife, Briane, children Stephen (Rumi Shiraki) and Erin (Alan) Hensley. Siblings Glenn (Nancy) Carter, Garry (Judy) Carter, Larry (Margo) Carter, and Nelda (Jimmy) Meixner. He is preceded in death by his parents.

His humor and ready smile will be missed by all.

Per his request, there will not be a service and he will be interred at Ft. Bliss. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to The Salvation Army El Paso.

My prayers and thoughts to Mrs. Carter and the family. Think of memories and that they are never gone, just stepped away for a while.

Mr. Carter,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army during the Cold War. Millions of Americans slept safe at night because you and your fellow Servicemen stood ready to defend our Country. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
