A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 9, at 3 p.m. at Providence Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John McCullough officiating.
Smiley served 16 years in the U.S. Air Force, receiving the Korean Service Medal, Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross with thre Oak Leaf Clusters, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Reserve Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), and the Air Medal with 25 Oak Leaf Clusters. During his Air Force career he flew many aircraft, including the P47, U-2 Spy plane, F84, F85, F86, and F105s. He served tours in Korea, Germany and Japan. Later he transferred into the U.S. Army and served a tour in Vietnam flying UH1 Hueys. Upon his Army retirement he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his contributions developing new tactical flight programs for rotary wing student pilots. After military retirement he was employed by Civil Service as a Flight Instructor and then General Classroom Instructor. He retired from the Civil Service after 20 years.
Smiley was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Helen Elizabeth (Beth) Everidge Smiley, formerly of Albany, Ga.; and two brothers, Willard and Howard Smiley.
Surviving are three daughters, Susan Elaine Smiley, Americus, Ga., Barbara Gail Smiley, Daleville, Ala., Janet Lynne Smiley, Daleville, Ala.; one step-daughter, Katherine Parr, Vero Beach, Fla.; sister-in-law, Pat Smiley, Mesa, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Sarah and Elizabeth; one nephew; and six nieces.
