A. Koehler Obituary

A. Grant Koehler A. Grant Koehler, age 62, of Millcreek, was taken by The Lord unexpectedly Tuesday, August 4, 2009. He was born in Pittsburgh on November 1, 1946, the only child of the late Arnold and Marian Alban Koehler. Grant graduated from California High School in Whittier, California. He was an equipment installer and supervisor with GTE and Verizon for 38 years, retiring in 2003. He also worked part time as a ski instructor and supervisor at Peek and Peak for many years. Grant was a member of the Elks, USA Cycling Federation, the NRA, and the PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America). He was an avid outdoorsman and elite athlete who enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing, cycling, hiking, and skiing to name a few. Those fortunate enough to have known him, recognized Grant as one of the kindest souls known who loved life, living each day to its fullest. He will be sadly missed by his survivors including his wife of 38 years, Rose Koehler; daughters Rebecca Dudenhoeffer and her husband, Joe, of Erie; Michelle Koehler and her friend, Jim Tyner, of Las Vegas, Nev.; Robin Whittaker and her husband, Jack, of London, England; Lisa Searcy and her husband, Steve, and their two children, Megan and Colby, of Las Vegas, Nev.; nephews, Nicholas and Daniel Trimble, and niece, Paige Pietras. Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street at Powell Ave. on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 10 until the time of service at 11 a.m. Send condolences at www.Burtonfuneralhome.com. Dear Rose,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have many fond memories of Grant when I was a little girl. May his soul rest in peace.

God Bless you,

August 10, 2009

Rose,

I was on a bike tour in the Finger Lakes, having a lunch break when I got the incredibly sad/shocking news on my cell phone. The other five guys I was with were all old bike riders/QUAD participants and to them and to myself Grant really was a legend. When he dropped that 27:50 TT this spring at age 62 it created a real buzz in the whole people-sports community and I was linked to quite an e-mail string with like-minded others that went on and on about how unreal that ride was. But it was Grant who did it which made it believeable because it seemed like he could do just about anything he put his mind to. Way more important than that ride or any of his other exploits, what I recall about Grant was his down-to-earth demeanor and modesty. In the early years of the QUAD Games there were a number of people that had skills but no one combined such class ability with being such a class guy. There wasn't ANYONE that didn't respect the man. Whenever Grant's name would come up, someone always had a good Grant story and it was always told with at least a slight touch of awe. I've been lucky to meet a lot of special people through the QUAD Games but Grant is really on a very special pedestal in my thoughts. I am so sorry for your loss but please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

When someone says the MAN, the Myth, the legend that was only one person. That was Grant Koehler. One Of the best I've ever met from a long time ago. I saw him on Bear Creek Road two months ago riding and he had already put 5000 miles on his bike by then for this year. We spoke of water skiing and bare footing a long time ago. Time really flies by. He was a great MAN and will be sadly missed.
Rose and Family we are so sorry for
your loss.

Rose, My heart is sorrowed for you at this difficult time. I am sorry I cannot be there to celebrate Grant's life as I am visiting family in Wisconsin. I shall always charish my time with Grant as we water skied, hunted with Tom and at work. One word comes to mind as I think of Grant. "Passion". Whatever Grant did, he did it so well because he always did it with passion. What was as impressive as how good he was at everything was how humble he was at the same time. All of us should be so fortunate to live life as full as Grant. Someone once told me it is not how long you live, but how much you live. Grant certinlly lived larger than than most anyone I know. He will be sadly missed by all of us, but he has left me with happy memories.

Sincerely,

Matt Putman

What a sad shock this is!

I "knew" Grant only as a name on the Presque Isle Time Trial records I keep, but I was delighted to see that he had recently done the race after a long hiatus and set another age group record (he has two others that are more than 15 years old). His time of 26:17.6 in the fall of *1986* makes him the 7th fastest individual ever.

It would have been fascinating to meet him.
