John Masterson Obituary

John W. Masterson, 61, passed away on Monday, June 6, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Erie, Pa., the oldest son of the late Leo Charles Masterson and Teresa Masterson Whitford and stepson to Leo Edwin Whitford.

John was a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather.

John spent his entire career in the financial services industry. John's career started in Warren, Pa. where he made relationships that remained with him throughout his lifetime. He was a Wealth Management Advisor with Merrill Lynch and also served as the Resident Director of the Erie office. John's priority was improving the quality of life for his clients, and he served them with integrity and compassion. Merrill Lynch awarded him the David Brady Award in 2014, which acknowledges an employee who continually enhances the lives of their colleagues, clients, and the communities in which they serve.

John was a true champion for the Erie Community and dedicated his time, talent and leadership skills to many organizations. John served on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Erie County, acting as Chairman of the Board in 2008 and 2009. He previously served on the Fairview School Board, the Erie Regional Library Foundation, Junior Achievement, and Kiaros Prison Ministry. John was a founding member and the first Trustee Committee Chair for the American Cancer Society Erie Golf Premier Tournament.

John was a proud graduate of St. George Catholic School, Cathedral Preparatory School, and Penn State University. He was a member of the Kahkwa Club. John had the unique ability to make the most of a twenty-four hour day. He loved life and enjoyed having fun, and made it a priority to see that his friends, family, and clients did too. John had a passion for golf, Erie sports teams, and travel. He especially cherished the memories of visiting his beloved Ireland.

John is survived by his wife, Monica Masterson; his children, Emily Lawrence and her husband Rick of Meadville, Pa., Robert Masterson of Erie, Bethany Kleinedler and her husband Kyle of Erie, Ian Fremer and his wife Karen McCrarey, of Cranberry, Pa., and Vanessa Fremer and her partner Kelly Haney, of Erie; his siblings, Peggy Sam and her husband Joe of Mill Village, Pat Masterson and his wife Lisa of Pensacola, Fla., Tim Whitford and his husband Keven Gorski of Allison Park, Pa., Beth Fischer and her husband Joe, of Erie, and Kathy Lux of Cleveland, Ohio; his grandchildren, Ashlyne, Grace and Abigail Lawrence, Charlotte Kleinedler, Richie and Anthony Kuzmin-Fremer, and Samantha Fremer; and many nieces and nephews. What a beautiful reunion you'll have. I love you Peg, sorry I can't be there. Just know I'm here if you me.

To all of John's family and friends, my wife and I share our deepest sympathies and pray that you find the strength and comfort to heal your broken hearts. John is resting peacefully in the arms of our Lord Almighty. May you all find solace in knowing that John's faith in the Lord and ours assures him and us of life ever after..."Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him." -- Thessalonians 4:13-14. John believed Jesus was the son of God. He will have eternal life with God. That is why we rejoice in the Lord always.
With love and prayers,
John and Terrie

I am so sorry to hear that John has gone on to join his Lord and watch over his family and us. My family grew up with John and his siblings and I will always remember his happiness and joy. After college I briefly moved back to Erie and Warren and got to know John as a dedicated professional and family man - he is known as a Quality Person. Rest in Peace, John - we love you

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dear Debbie, Emily, Robb and Beth ... for 25 years our families have shared our lives with each other. Whether on a baseball field, at a band competition, a football game, a wedding, the birth of a child or supporting each other through the loss of a family member, we have shared life's joys and disappointments. Losing John has brought back all those memories. It's those memories that help to ease the pain of the loss we all feel. All of you are in our thoughts and prayers for comfort and peace of mind as we say goodbye to a wonderful man, who left deep, loving impressions on our hearts.

I had John as a professor of Finance at Mercyhurst University. I'm an adult student and the courses in the adult college are almost always taught on nights and weekends. John never missed a beat and always brought a smile and energy to our late classes. He was also extremely accommodating in allowing me to reschedule a test during my own family emergency and helpful when it came to personal finance recommendations. I'm saddened to hear the news of his passing and my sincerest condolences are given to his friends and family. He was a top notch professor and will be missed in the community very much!

John- how can we even think about him without smiling? What a wonderful man and friend! This past year when he would call us about our investments, he would end the call with, 'I love you,'- which I thought was a slip because it was something he said so often to his family. When I teased him and said, 'John-do you realize you just told us you love us?!'- he replied, 'Yes! I do love you and Rick in a very special way!' He will be missed and we were privileged to know him and be a small part of his life. Monica, condolences to you and all of John's family.

Rob, Emily, Bethany and family:
I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad was one of a kind. I would always enjoy running into him across town, usually at something golf-related. He was always genuinely interested in what me or my siblings were up to, and he would always say something encouraging. He was a warm, caring guy and so many people are better off for having known him. May all your memories of him get you through this difficult time. God Bless you and your family.
