Susan McIntosh Obituary

McIntosh, Susan Kathryn

Susan Kathryn McIntosh, died Dec. 18, in Sarasota, Fla., at the age of 67. Miss McIntosh, a broadcast journalist and former Miss Fond du Lac 1967, began her career at the Fond du Lac Commonwealth Reporter in 1965, opting to leave university studies to pursue her lifetime interest in news writing. She remained in Fond du Lac until 1972, when she moved to Chicago, Ill., and found a job with WLS-TV, an American Broadcasting Company station. Susan's first job with ABC - as a researcher for a televised "action line" - paid $130 a week, the exact dollar amount she earned at the Reporter, as feature and entertainment editor. Over the course of her long career, she moved on to produce award-winning investigative reports, special segments and newscasts. She was one of the networks' first female 10 o'clock producers. She also was a loyal member of the National Assn of Broadcasting Engineers and Technicians and served as union steward for the writer's group for many years.

Miss McIntosh, who lived in Des Plaines, Ill. and Sarasota, Fla., was the daughter of Robert and Anna Marie (Holzmann) McIntosh of Fond du Lac.

She was married three times: to the late Terrence Julka of Malone in 1969; the late David M Green of Chicago, in 1976; and William Hartsell III of Knoxville, TN, in 1994.

An avid gardener, she took great joy in her skills with landscaping, creating park-like gardens that welcomed all visitors. She was always surrounded by numerous pets, usually a trio of dogs. And for a time, exotic fish and pet birds, as well.

Miss McIntosh is survived by many dear friends; two brothers, John (Esther) McIntosh, Malone; and William McIntosh, Fond du Lac; four nephews, Eric McIntosh, Fond du Lac; Benjamin (Joanne) McIntosh and Peter McIntosh, Fond du Lac; and James (Lindsay) McIntosh, Mt. Calvary, Wis. She was a fond aunt of three great-nieces, Hadiyah, Mary Jane and Ellie, and one great-nephew, Elijah. Funeral services are private.

So sorry to hear about Sue's passing. She trained me and I ended up replacing her when she retired. I use to watch her house and pets for her sometimes. We had a lot of fun going to OTB on our lunch hour! Sue was a great lady and a true friend to people as well as animals. God bless.

I have known Susan most of my life. She was my sister's best friend, and I was 9 when I met her. I remember seeing her crown (she earned as Miss FondDuLac - what a beauty she was!!). I've always appreciated Susan's wit and her warmth, and continued to stay connected to Susan through my sister, Jane. They were life long friends and spoke daily. We will all miss her very much! My thoughts and prayers go our to her family and friends.- Mollie Lawrence

So very sorry to hear of Susan's death. We were great friends in 1965. I was fresh out of the Army after spending two years in West Berlin and then working at the "new" Osco Drug. All these years later I can still see Sue knocking on the Window at Osco and asking me if lunch was possible. Sue was one of those most loving and caring person I ever knew. How I remember the night she was crowned Miss FDL, she loved the title but it never went to her head. I think of you often through the years and now will miss you so. Terry Huelsman
