Leona Howell Obituary

Leona Howell
Loving daughter, sister, wife and mother, Leona Howell, passed away peacefully at her home in Colorado Springs, Colorado on November 16, 2021 after a long battle with cancer. She was born October 23, 1947 (74 years old), in Wellsville, Missouri, the daughter of Leon Marshall and Velma May (Roberts) Dodd.
Leona graduated from Wellsville-Middletown High School, Class of 1965. Following graduation, she worked for the University of Missouri Hospitals and lived in Columbia, Missouri. She married Robert Thomas Howell (Tom), at Wellsville Christian Church in June 1971 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. The newlyweds moved to Hallsville, Missouri in 1972. Leona enjoyed square dancing and began a lifelong passion with painting and making ceramics.
Leona was dedicated to her family being mother to four children. Twins, Jessica Kathlene, of Columbia, Missouri, and Christina Denise, of St. Louis, Missouri, born in 1974. Roberta Michelle, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, born in 1980. The fourth child, Marshall Thomas, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, born in 1987. Leona and Tom raised their children in Hallsville, Missouri where they lived for 41 years. Leona was very involved with activities while raising her children which included school crossing guard, Girl Scout leader, PTA, athletic booster, and other school related organizations. She was also active with the Red Top Christian Church while living in Hallsville.
In addition to all of those undertakings, Leona worked for the City of Hallsville for many years. Serving as both City and Court Clerk, many current Hallsville residents knew Leona by her smile and customer service. She also worked for the USDA assisting with national agriculture statistics.
Leona moved with her husband to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 2013. After moving to Colorado, she became very active in the Fountain Valley Senior Center where she regularly took quilting classes and helped teach a card making and stamping class. A primary reason for such a big move was to be closer to her grandchildren, Chloe Sky and Ian Rain Goolie (children of Roberta and Rich Goolie). Leona had one other grandchild, Ryland Marshall Huffman (child of Jessica Howell).
Leona was predeceased by both her parents. Surviving in addition to her husband is her brother George David Dodd, of Farber, Missouri. Leona also has numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 12 p.m., Saturday November 27, 2021, at Red Top Christian Church, 14355 North Route U, Hallsville, Missouri 65255.
