My father, who was a math professor at Florida State University, collaborated with Dr. Schonefeld on math research decades ago. Like Dr. Schonefeld, my father specialized in functional analysis. My father spoke frequently of Dr. Schonefeld, always in a respectful way, and he regarded him as a friend. My father passed away on April 1, 2023; my mother passed away on March 2, 2024. As I was going through my parents' things, I found a letter from Dr. Schonefeld addressed to my mother and father - it was tucked away in a book. The letter was written in 1982 or 1983. It was not dated, but it started out "Dear Wilbur and Evalyn, Well, we survived the winter of 1982 and the Fort Wayne flood." My father knew about Dr. Schonefeld's passing - I remember him telling me about that. I wish to express my belated condolences to Dr. Schonefeld's family.

Maryellen, you have my sincerest condolences on the loss of a brilliant man with a sly sense of humor. You and Steve fit each other so well. I hope you can find comfort by treasuring the many years you had and the memories you built together.

I would like to offer my sincere condolences to Steve's family, sorry for your loss. Jeremiah 29:11, 12 assures us that God is thinking thoughts of peace towards us, to give us a future and a hope, and that if we come and pray to Him, He will listen to us. May that bring you comfort in this time of sorrow.
