Vernon Hodge Obituary

Vernon W. Hodge

Vernon Wayne Hodge, age 65, of Woodford, VA, died with his family at his side on January 13, 2022 in the home he built timber by timber.

He was born in Charlottesville, VA on March 22, 1956, the second son of Robert and Lois Hodge of Fredericksburg.

A skilled carpenter and mechanic, Vernon never met a problem for which he couldn't rig up a solution. Vernon served the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development for 29 years as a building code specialist and secretary of the State Technical Review Board. He was impossibly patient and intellectually curious, with interests ranging from mechanics to music theory to the workings of the universe. A steady baritone, he was a long-time member of the Bowling Green Baptist Church Choir.

He leaves behind his wife of over 25 years, Terry Hodge, and four children: Emily Hodge, Michelle Kube Graves, Joseph Hodge, and Erin Kube. He adored his grandchildren: Evan, Tripp, Isaac, and Julian. Vernon had many loving relatives, including his brothers Allen and Perry Hodge, his first wife Mary Hodge, and Rachel Kube Goodloe.

The family will hold a service at Bowling Green Baptist Church later this spring. Special thanks to nurse Carole Griffin and music therapist Allie Haryanto of Mary Washington Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please consider a random act of kindness or donating to 516 Project, Inc., which provides carpentry work to people in need.

Terry, I know you continue to miss Vernon every day
as he was such a kind man who did a lot for his community. This will help you keep his spirit alive as people do not forget. I receive constant reminders from friends and family about my husband's kindness. This is quite a legacy and I believe Kenny and Vernon share this admiration from others.

Today 4-22-2022, I heard of Vernon's passing. It leaves an empty space in my heart. I knew Vernon through DHCD. He was my go-to person. I was always honored when he would call me and ask a question.

May the Heavenly Father bless his family and keep his memory alive in our hearts.

I knew his daughter Emily when she was at Bowling Green Elementary. She was such a wonderful, bright child that I always thought she was a part of a great family. I am sorry to see that Vernon died so young.

Dear Terry and Family, so sorry to hear about Vernon's illness and death. I only met him once, but could tell what a good man he was. He was blessed to have you as his loving family and caregivers. May you all find peace and comfort in many happy memories, and in knowing that his suffering is behind him. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through this very sad time. Terrie Crawley

Dear Terry, I only knew Vernon and Perry by Mr. Hodges comments in the classroom. I extend my deepest sympathy. I lost my husband at this young age and it is hard. My husband and I both had Mr. Hodge as a teacher and I recently shared our great admiration for him with Perry. Vernon appears to have been as wonderful as his parents.
