Martin Cohen Obituary

COHEN, MARTIN "MARTY", founder, President and Creative Director of Cohen & Company Creative Advertising in Hollywood, passed away Monday evening at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach. He was 63. The cause was a result of a two-year battle with cancer, said David Cohen, his youngest son. Born in Far Rockaway, New York on November 23, 1939, Marty's family moved to Miami Beach in 1945. He attended Miami Beach High School, becoming All-City in baseball. His playing ability got him a cup of coffee with the Philadelphia Phillies Farm system, where a knee injury ended his major league hopes, but began a lifetime association as an avid fan. He then served in the Coast Guard Reserve and attended Palm Beach Community College, where he pursued his studies as well as acting, appearing in many student productions, and having received reviews that surpassed a fellow student at the time - Burt Reynolds. But it was in advertising that Marty achieved real fame. As Creative Director and President, Marty, along with his wife Gerri, sons Michael, Jay and David, daughter Marci and brother Richard, built Cohen & Company Creative into one of the top ten ad agencies in South Florida. His keen understanding of real estate advertising attracted a client roster that includes some of the largest builders and developers in the country. His talents, sense of humor, passion for great advertising and his high regard for always recognizing the efforts of his team - he always referred to "we" as being responsible for the achievements of the company - guided his clients towards much success as well as recognition, having been honored with hundreds of top local, regional and national marketing and creative awards. Marty was also a prominent member of the Builders Association of South Florida. Having served on their board and was responsible for their many special events and award celebrations. Marty is survived by his wife of almost 42 years, Gerri, of Hollywood, his sons Michael, of Davie, Jay, of Hollywood, and David of Davie, a daughter Marci (mother of his two beloved grandchildren, Joey and Hayley), of Hollywood, his brother Richard, of Sunrise, and sister Honey, of St. Louis, Missouri. The family would like to thank Dr. Enrique Davila and his team at Mt. Sinai Aventura for their exceptional work in their treatment of Marty. Funeral will take place Thursday, November 20, at 2 pm at the Levitt Weinstein Chapel at Beth David Cemetery, 3201 NW 72 Ave., Hollywood. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations in Marty's name can be made to AMC Cancer Research Center. Please call Adrianne at 305-933-9243 for further details. Marty popped in my head today. I have thought about him many times through the years. I was saddened to find this obit. Marty was my first boss, my mentor and a father figure to me back in the 1980's. He hired me with no experience and taught me so much. I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to learn from him, one of the best Creative Directors who ever lived, in my opinion, and just a great man. I spent over 35 years in creative advertising after I left Hollywood and owe my own success to him. Godspeed my dear friend. Thanks for showing up.

I am eternally in the debt of Marty Cohen and his family. He gave me a chance in advertising when no on else would. If it weren’t for him, I’d be a cop on the streets of Brooklyn today, but instead I’m pursuing my passion in art and graphic design as a team member of Cohen & Company Creative. My love and infinite gratitude to the man who gave me my first shot.

Superman has nothing on you! My life now has an emptyness- a void. Joey & Hayley say I love you & goodnight every evening as they blow kisses to the sky. The truly miss you so very much. We love you dearly daddy and grandpa. But I know you are at peace. Thanks for the great memories and the wonderful legacy you have left us. Our greatest respect to you daddy...Mr. Creative...

Marty was one of the nicest guys I ever knew. I was his "shipmate" (USCGR "Roger-19", 1957-1958).

Dear Gerri, Michael, Jay, Marci,David and childen: So sorry to read about Marty.I was sure he would beat the odds, he was so strong and brilliant. Seeing it first hand for a period of time... I know how much he loved and respected all of you, and his family. He was always there for you all first and foremost, and know you were all there for him.

He had a great talent, and I know he has left a great legacy and memory not only to you his family, but to myself as well...and so many others who knew and interacted with him. I have some funny and fascinating memories to keep. I will always remember his trust and our friendship, not only with him but with you Gerri, and the kids. My sincerest condolences,
