PHILIP MANOOGIAN Obituary

Phil Manoogian, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and friend, entered into his eternal rest on Saturday, September 17, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. Phil was born on March 9, 1943, in Reedley to Philip and Margaret Manoogian. He attended Dinuba High School, Reedley College, and graduated from Fresno State College in1968. He continued his education, earning a Teaching Credential in 1969 and began his educational career with the Fresno Unified School District (FUSD). After teaching for three years, he entered into administration as Vice Principal and eventually into the Special Education Department. In 1982, at attended Fresno Pacific College and earned a Master's Degree in Educational Administration. He worked as the Director of Special Education for 22 years, and ended his career in the Student Services/Transfers Department as an Administrative Manager. Phil worked in FUSD for 35 years, retiring in 2004 to spend more time with his family. Phil married Jackie Surabian of Reedley on September 2, 1967. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Pamela and Suzanne. They were truly the light of his life, and he enjoyed being an active participant in everything they did. He read with them nightly, had tea parties, beamed with pride at their dance recitals, cheered them at their sporting events, and helped them with their homework and school projects. He also enjoyed taking his girls fishing, to Indian Guides, and Fresno State sporting events. He was also an avid San Francisco 49er and Giants fan and passed that enthusiasm onto his daughters. He and Jackie enjoyed many family vacations with their girls. There was nothing more important or valuable to Phil that spending time with his family. In 1994, his daughter Pam married Matthew Jendian. Adding to his joy was the birth of his two grandsons, Joshua and Nicholas. He cherished every moment he spent with them, playing an active role in their lives. In 2006, his family grew once again when his daughter Suzanne married Darrin Peters. Adding more joy to the family was the addition of two more grandchildren, Paige and Cole. He loved being "Papa" to all of his grandchildren. Phil was an active member of St. Paul Armenian Church, where he served on the Parrish Council, was a member of the Men's Forum, served as Sunday School superintendent, and coached ACYO volleyball Team for many years. In 2009, he received the 'Hye Spirit Award', for his may years of dedicated service to the Church. Phil was also a member of the Knight's of Vartan, Sanger Tigers, and Selma Triple X-Fraternity, where he served as Master, and chaired many committees. In addition, Phil was a strong supporter of Fresno State Athletics and a member of the Bulldog Foundation. Our family would like to thank Dr. Rod Kraft, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dr. John Garry, Dr. Christopher Julian, Dr. Peter Wittlinger, Dr. Manhu John, Dr. Dexter Estrada, and the entire staff at St. Agnes Cancer Center for their devoted care throughout the years. Many thanks also to the staff at St. Agnes 4th Floor CICU for their compassion during Phil's final days, and to Precious King who was always there when needed. Phil will be remembered as a man of integrity and compassion who touched many lives. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten. Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Margaret; an infant son Robert; brother Charles; and brother-in-law, Jerry Surabian. He is survived by his loving wife Jackie; his daughter, Pamela Jendian and her husband Matthew of Clovis, his daughter, Suzanne Peters and her husband Darrin of Fresno; grandchildren, Joshua and Nicholas, Jendian and Paige and Cole Peters. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Jane Corbett, Sharon Schmidt, and Janice Surabian; brother-in-law, Dennis Surabian; and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Visitation will be held at Cairns Funeral Home in Reedley on Thursday, September 22, 2011, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Knight's of Vartan Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Home Service. Phil Manoogian was a loving husband, father and father-in-law, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and godfather, and he devoted his professional life to education. To honor his love of family, philanthropic spirit, and commitment to education, the Humanics Program at Fresno State hopes to establish a Philip T. Manoogian Philanthropic Award through contributions in lieu of flowers to present at its 2012 Students4Giving Press Conference. Phil's first cousin, Brian Tatarian, who emceed the memorial luncheon on Friday, 9/23/11, said, "Phil emphasized that you don't go to college and earn your degree to make money; you go to college and earn your degree to make a difference." In the past five years, the Humanics Program at Fresno State has awarded a total of $41,000 to 14 nonprofit Community Benefit Organizations making a difference in Central California (see http://www.fresnoah.org/tag/philanthropyproject). To contribute to the establishment of this Philanthropic Grant Award in Phil's memory, visit http://www.fresnoah.org/pages/donate. Acknowledgements will be sent to Phil's family. (Matthew Jendian)

Dear Manoogian Family,

On behalf of the entire Adair family, please accept our most sincere condolences during this period in your lives. As you probably recall, we were your "right across the street" neighbors during the 1970's. Phil and my dad used to get together in the evenings or after work and do a little "shop talk" - as both of them worked for FUSD. My sister Robin used to babysit for Pamela / Suzanne when they were very little. I was your yard caretaker during the summer when you folks went on vacation (1977 was the last year I did this - don't ask me why I remember that). Yep - lots of good times and great memories. Again, on behalf of dad (Stan), mom (Joyce), and my sister (Robin), please accept our sympathy during this period.

Remembering Phil, Teddy as we called him, and his brother Charles. My Father Arthur and Phil Sr. were brothers and for a few years we lived on the same ranch, so I have a lot of fun memories with the Manoogian boys. There was a small irragation ditch between our two houses and when we children had been naughty we were not allowed to cross the little bridge to see each other. Those were the good old days which will remain with me always.
Our sincere sympathy to Jackie, Pamela & Susane.
