Rock Hill, SC - Reverend Dr. French B. O'Shields, Jr., 92, of 1330 India Hook Road, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at his residence.
Born in Gaffney, he was the loving husband for 71 years of the late Alma Lee O'Shields and the son of the late French B. O'Shields, Sr. and Carrie Sams O'Shields. He was a graduate of Gaffney High School where he was President of his student body, a graduate of USC, received his Master's degree from Erskine College and his Doctorate of Ministry from Union Theological Seminary. He was a retired Presbyterian minister serving in Abbeville, SC, Augusta, GA and Charlotte, NC. He wrote the book "Slaying the Giant" under his ministry "Hem of His Garment". He and Alma traveled the country and abroad teaching seminars and workshops on overcoming depression. He was also a syndicated columnist in several newspapers in the South. French was very proud of his Gaffney heritage, loved his family, the beach, traveling, and was an avid Carolina Panthers fan and PSL owner.
Surviving are two sons, French B. O'Shields, III (Wendy) of Lake Wylie and Thomas "Randy" O'Shields (Jane) of Keller, TX; two daughters, Reverend Kathryn O. Hunter (Reverend Dr. James) of Old Fort, NC and Rebecca O. Powers (Michael) of Clover; eight grandchildren, Erin Steed (Chris), Cammie Egan (Joey), Patrick Powers (Sherry), Adam Powers, Kristin Monczynski (Matt), Taylor O'Shields, Katie Drayton (Theron) and Lee O'Shields (Kelly); nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert "Bob" O'Shields.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 2, 2022 at Limestone Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dr. James C. Hunter and Reverend Kathryn O'Shields Hunter officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Limestone Presbyterian Church, 101 E. Jefferies Street, Gaffney, SC, 29340 or a charity of your choice.
The family will be at their respective homes.
