Arolyn Lockwood Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Arolyn Winona (Mathers) Lockwood died peacefully Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, with her family at her side.

One of nine children, Winona was born Jan. 30, 1927, in Williamsburg, to the late Robert and Arolyn (Prouty) Mathers. She attended Williamsburg schools, but left early to care for her younger siblings. An avid reader, Winona continued her studies on her own, becoming well versed in geology and history, and was especially interested in Eleanor Roosevelt. Winona instilled the love of reading in her children and grandchildren, and loved a good game of Scrabble.

She worked for Hodgkins Realty for many years, and in later years for Clarke School, but her happiest times were at home with her family. From early spring to first snowfall, Winona could almost always be found working in her flower gardens. Evenings were spent knitting countless baby blankets and sweaters for expectant family members and friends.

Winona is survived by her children, Margaret Theriault and husband Louis of Quitman, Texas, Patricia Delude and husband Arthur of Tolland, Connecticut, William Lockwood and wife Danna of Williamsburg, and Kathaleen Emerson and husband Gary of Williamsburg; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her brother Charles Mathers and sisters Lily Rustemeyer, Anne Mathers, and Lucy Michaud.

Winona was predeceased by her beloved husband Robert in 2012 and grandson Michael Willliam Lockwood in 1978.

Funeral arrangements are private.

Donations in Winona's memory may be made to the Friends of the Williamsburg Libraries, P.O. Box 46, Williamsburg, MA 01096, or to the Western Mass Food Bank, 97 North Hatfield Road, Hatfield, MA 01038.
