NORTHAMPTON - Nelly S. Hoyt, 95, passed away Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, at Highview Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 28, 1920, in Nikoliev, Ukraine.
Her family moved to Berlin and then to Paris. While in Paris, she danced with the Ballets de Jeunesse and studied anthropology
at the University of Paris. She and her parents fled war torn Europe for New York City arriving in 1941. She was awarded the Harriet Boyd Hawes Scholarship from Smith College and graduated magna cum laude in 1943. She then attended Columbia University as a university fellow. She earned her master's degree in history in 1944 and her doctorate in 1946.
She remained in New York for several years where she worked as an interpreter and reference analyst for the United Nations. She married N. Deming Hoyt, a professor of education at Columbia in 1947. During a 1949 trip to Northampton to show her husband the area, Nelly was offered a one year teaching position in the history department of Smith College, thus started her 40 plus year career.
She was predeceased by her parents Simon and Vera (Rivkind) and her husband N. Deming Hoyt. She is survived by her son Victor and her beloved daughter-in-law Joanne and their children Sean Deming, Colin Joseph, and Caitlin Natalie Hoyt; her daughter Suzy Hoyt and her daughters Emily Bisbee and Elizabeth Rauch. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Avery Deming, Brandon Victor, Oliver Simon, Joanna Marie Hoyt and Louise Rauch.
There are no calling hours and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Details regarding a memorial to be held in the spring will be published at a later date.
