BELMOND - Beulah L. Esk, age 93, of Belmond, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at the Kanawha Community Home.
Funeral sevices for Beulah L. Esk will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Immanuel Reformed Church east of Belmond. Pastor Troy Pflibsen will officiate. Burial will take place in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery.
Visitation for Beulah L. Esk was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond and will continue one hour prior to services at the church today.
Beulah Lenora, the daughter of Hilko and Amanda Mients Barkema was born March 5, 1919, near Belmond. She was one of seven children. Her mother died during childbirth when Beulah was 13 years old. That left Beulah and and her sister Grace to help her father raise the other five children, the youngest being four years old. Beulah was educated in the Meservey Consolidated School and other rural schools.
Beulah was united in marriage to Alfred Esk in the Immanuel Reformed Church parsonage in Klemme, Iowa, on December 21, 1938. They started farming at Belmond and later moved to Lake Mills, Iowa. Beulah worked at the Cummins/Fleetgaurd Company for 26 and a half years. She loved her flowers and loved fishing and working outdoors. Alfred and Beulah were blessed with four daughters, Elaine, Alberta, Bernice and Evalene.
Alfred passed away in January of 1976. She moved back to her hometown Belmond in 1989.
Beulah is survived by her daughters, Elaine Dotson and husband, George of Sweetwater, Tenn., Alberta Boham and husband, John of Omaha, Neb., Bernice Butler and husband, Daryl of Albia, , Evalene Martin and husband, Chris of Waverly, nine grandchildren, Lisa (Chris) Union, Cheryl (Jessie) Skudler, Beth (Tim) Stenzel, Tim (Brenda) Butler, Jeffrey (Jody) Butler, Amanda (Michael) Thomas, Michael (Pamela) Butler, Rhiannon (Robert) Barrentine, Brittney Martin, eleven great- grandchildren, Melinda, Daniel, Hunter, Troy, Zachery, Carly, Maxwell, Quintin, Brody, Blair, Taylor, a sister, Evelyn DeGroote and husband, Harlan, a brother, Dale Barkema and wife, Arlene, two sisters-in-law, Pearl Barkema, Viola Barkema and numerous other nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Orval andBud (Junior), and two sisters, Grace Esk and Leola Trowbridge.
